Sylvia Jeffreys and Tom Steinfort to host Today

Nine has named Sylvia Jeffreys and Tom Steinfort as the new co-hosts of Today, confirming the pair will lead the breakfast program into 2027.

The appointments follow Sarah Abo’s decision to leave both Today and Nine at year's end. Abo joined Karl Stefanovic at the desk in January 2023 and has co-hosted the program for four years.

Her departure came shortly after Stefanovic exited Nine immediately amid a dispute involving his independent podcast business, leaving the network to rebuild its flagship breakfast line-up.

Jeffreys and Steinfort will now front a broader shake-up of Nine’s morning television schedule, with changes to Today’s format, pace and commercial integrations set to be unveiled at the Nine 2027 Upfront.

Nine said the decision followed extensive research into breakfast television, viewer behaviour and audience feedback.

The pair bring a combined four decades of experience across journalism and television presenting, with previous roles spanning 60 Minutes, 9News, Today and Today Extra.

Jeffries will be up against her husband, Peter Stefanovic, who is the host of First Edition on Sky News, which airs daily starting from 6:00am.

The end of an era at Today

The departure of Stefanovic on June 23 this year began a time of turbulence for the show.

Earlier that week, The Karl Stefanovic Show posted an interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson on YouTube.

The backlash from the public was so significant, Nine executives held crisis meetings to consider Stefanovic's future.

Eventually, Nine and Stefanovic parted ways.

Abo remained as co-host with a number of different substitutes until she left on maternity leave on July 15.

She and her husband, Cyrus Moran, welcomed their baby boy, Sonny, shortly after in July 2026.

Yesterday, Nine announced that Abo will leave the network at the end of 2026, and will not return to host Today.
