The end of the 'polished' post: why authentic brand storytelling is the new SEO superpower in the era of AI slop
Yango's Hannah Mannion says AI platforms now judge brands on consensus, not polish – and that changes the game entirely.

Many marketers we talk to worry about a decline in organic clicks to their websites, watching traffic drop and panicking that something is wrong with their SEO strategy.
Most of the time, however, no one has done anything wrong - your SEO strategy isn't necessarily failing you. What you're seeing is the rise of zero-click search, where people get their answers directly from AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, or AI Overviews.
The industry's concerned reaction has focused on losing visibility, with brands desperately churning out "AI-optimised" content. The result? Our feeds are chock-a-block with "AI slop"- generic, low-value content that lacks personal experience and original insight.
The reality is, when you can whip up a polished 600-word thought leadership piece in four seconds, the value of simply writing well drops and the definition of expertise changes for the worse.
We believe the solution to this AI saturation isn't more automation. It's the one thing machines cannot do well: authentic brand storytelling.
The era of consensus-driven search
For years, the industry treated brand storytelling and SEO as two completely different strategies. Brand storytelling was for the creatives, SEO was for the tech nerds – but AI search has completely changed the narrative.

AI platforms don't read a webpage the way traditional search engines do; they act like thorough researchers looking for consensus. They don't just care about what you say about your brand on your website. They are scraping platforms like Reddit and LinkedIn, and authoritative news sites, to figure out what real people actually think about you.
If your brand story isn't authentic, consistent, and compelling across all these platforms, you will struggle to build consensus. AI cares less about what is technically correct and more about the general consensus surrounding your brand.
This means your social media presence is now actively feeding your AI presence. Your digital PR sends massive trust signals to AI bots and gets cited by credible media sources, even if they don't give you a backlink.
In other words: Your brand's digital footprint and how authentically you tell your story across the web is now your most important search strategy.
Imperfection as a trust signal
Because "perfection" is now cheap and easy to achieve, Aussies are already learning to spot the AI slop signs.
In this landscape, imperfection and authenticity become the new trust signals. An honest opinion backed by unique data, a vulnerable admission about a campaign that went pear-shaped, or genuine engagement in a Reddit thread can build the deep authority generative engines are looking for.
If you aren't proactively telling your brand's story and making it easy for bots to understand, AI will simply make up a story using outdated sources - or worse, give the microphone to your competitor.
The zero-click silver lining
Remaining results-driven is key. If a generative engine answers the user's question right there on the screen, you might be asking, 'Why should I even bother putting effort into storytelling?'
Well, because zero-click search means the brand impression happens directly inside the AI answer. If an AI solves someone's complex problem and cites your brand as the definitive expert, you've just won their trust at the exact moment they are making a purchasing decision.
Visitors coming to your site from AI search arrive with high intent, having already done deep research, so they tend to convert at a higher rate than a traditional search visitor. This is backed by new research from Telsyte, which reports that around 12% of Aussie consumers now name generative AI tools as their primary way of finding information online.
The worst thing you can do right now is wait. You don't need a brand-new budget for this; you just need to stop siloing your paid, organic, PR, and social efforts.
The brands that will win in the future of search aren't the ones writing the most AI content. They are the ones leaning into their people-focused values, building authentic trust across the whole digital ecosystem, and letting their brand story lead the way.
