Enigma and Mobile Muster snag $500,000 SBS prize with ‘phone death’
The laundromat-set campaign won $500,000 in SBS advertising inventory to push more Australians towards mobile phone recycling.

Enigma and Mobile Muster have won the 2026 SBS Sustainability Challenge, securing $500,000 in advertising inventory for a campaign built around an everyday disaster: killing your phone in the wash.
The winning TVC extends Mobile Muster’s “However it Dies” creative platform with a darkly comic phone death story set in a laundromat. The work was conceived by Enigma and directed by Paul Middleditch.
The campaign film is designed to push more Australians to recycle old handsets rather than leave them sitting in drawers or send them to landfill.
Why SBS picked ‘However it Dies’
SBS Cultural Connect national manager Kate Young said the judges saw the campaign as the strongest opportunity to connect with audiences and change behaviour.

“The judges felt the idea had the strongest potential to connect emotionally with audiences and drive consumer behaviour change. It’s a clear, memorable creative platform with a strong sustainability outcome and a considered low-impact production approach.”
Mobile Muster head of sustainability and social impact Helen Maisano said the advertising prize would give the recycling program a larger platform to reach Australians.
“We are excited to receive this prize to bring this campaign to life and inspire more Australians to get their old phones out of drawers and into recycling. Mobile phone recycling is important, as it keeps potentially hazardous materials from ending up in landfill, and allows organisations to reuse those materials, which reduces the need for further mining,” she said.
Mobile Muster is a not-for-profit product stewardship program funded voluntarily by Australia’s telecommunications industry and managed by the Australian Telecommunications Alliance.
Enigma celebrates the win
Mobile Muster marketing and communications manager Joel Murray credited Enigma with helping develop the wider campaign platform.
“We’re incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, not only with this film but across the broader suite of campaign creative developed through our collaboration.”
Enigma chief creative officer and partner Simon Lee said the result gave the agency an added reason to celebrate.
“It’s always nice to be a winner, but particularly nice when winning benefits the planet. A big THANK YOU to SBS for creating this great annual initiative and a collective BRAVO to our clients Joel and Helen, our wonderful team at Enigma and Paul for creating a truly Unignorable piece of work.”
Enigma and Mobile Muster beat three other finalists for the 2026 prize. The runners-up were Howatson & Company with Australian Museum, Sandbox Media with Recycle All, and Focus Creative with Vehicle Emissions Star Ratings.
The campaign was produced by Plaza, with editing by The Editors and sound production by Heckler Sound.
