Prince Harry swings by MasterChef Australia - with a potential ulterior motive

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, served up a guest appearance on Ten's MasterChef Australia last night, delighting cast members.

But it was her husband's surprise during the episode that stole the spotlight. 

Prince Harry Facetimed his wife in the famed kitchen, making for a memorable television moment.

Meghan was tasting dishes when a crew member came onto set holding a phone, saying, “Sorry to interrupt. We’ve had a call into the studio.”

“Hi, my love! My husband’s here,” Meghan tells everyone excitedly, just in case someone has been in a coma for three decades before appearing on the show.

“What’s going on? Have I interrupted something important?” Harry jokes.

Meghan tells him, “Well, we are actually in the middle of tasting all the dishes. We have four incredible cooks here. It’s amazing; they’re so talented. We wish you were here.” 

She explains to the studio, “He’s in Canberra right now with the veterans.”

“I wish you could try this. These dishes are fantastic,” she continues to her husband. 

“It’s really delicious, and there’s a hot sauce that, well, you know me … it is so good. I think it might be too much for you. It’s spicy.”

Harry ends the call with, “Well, go and enjoy it. I’m very sorry to disturb you. All is well here. I’ll see you later.”

During the episode, Meghan talks food and shares that she sometimes finds it challenging to feed her family because she has “so many different palates to appease.”

Meghan was there for what was essentially a PR exercise, but it may be that Harry also had an extra motive for dialling in.

Prince Harry dials into MasterChef Australia

After the couple's Netflix deal was cancelled earlier this year, Meghan has experienced some recent major success, as Mediaweek reported in July. Despite being universally panned by viewers and critics, her lifestyle show on Netflix has earned a 2026 Emmy Award nomination.

Meghan ('I'm a Sussex now') made the announcement public at the time, posting a pretty shot in the garden, and writing in the caption: "Huge congratulations to the amazing crew, producers, and team who worked on ‘With Love, Meghan’ on @netflix.

And it seems Harry may be (again) chasing the same high-profile success.

News24.com.au reports that Harry could have been drumming up interest in a potential sequel to his book, Spare.

Speaking exclusively to the publication, journalist Paula Froelich said: 

“They’re kind of running out of money… And there are some rumours that he's been thinking about trying to write another book, because Spare did well. 

"He was overpaid for it - but it did do well. So there are rumours that he is trying to drum up interest in some sort of a Spare Part Two.”

A sequel could very well help the family out after the loss of their lucrative Netflix deal.

Published by Penguin Random House in 2023, News24 reports that Spare sold more than six million copies worldwide and became the UK’s fastest-selling non-fiction book, landing Harry more than $44m.

The outlet also said: “Froelich recently reported that Harry and Meghan were taking out a second mortgage on their Montecito mansion, citing information from the Daily Mail’s Alison Boshoff.”
