Melbourne Radio Ratings 2021: Survey 7
GfK Survey 7, Survey Period: Sunday August 15 to Saturday September 18, and Sunday September 26 to Saturday October 30

UP: 3AW +0.7
DOWN: 101.9 FOX FM -1.1

3AW 18.9% (18.2%)

Cume: 815,000 (-15,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 20.6% (13.3%)
Best Breakfast 28.4% (15.9%)

With another radio ratings lift this time, this survey is now the third best result for 3AW in over six years. The 56th consecutive survey win is also another triumph for Ross and Russel as they climb higher to 24.3% which is now their fourth best result, trailing only those shares from last year over 25%. In morning Neil Mitchell managed another share over 20% while Dee Dee Dunleavy and Tom Elliott also grew their numbers. The station grew its 40-54 share where 3AW only trails Gold. Share also climbed in the station’s traditional happy hunting grounds of 55-64 and 64+.

Gold 104.3 10.9% (10.9%)

Cume 1,011,000 (-12,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 10.8% (8.7%)
Best Breakfast 9.4% (7.2%)

The station has just one more survey result which could mean a record whole year in double figures. Gold breakfast dipped a little this survey, down 0.8 to 8.6, but Christian O’Connell has enough of a buffer to still be the clear favourite among FM radio listeners. Gold remains a clear FM choice across the day with sessions hosted by Craig Huggins, Toni Tenaglia and Gavin Miller. Gold is a clear leader with all people 40-54 and #1 FM 55-64.

smoothfm 91.5 7.0% (6.8%)

Cume 833,000 (-33,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 9.7% (6.5%)
Best Breakfast 7.3% (5.0%)

The Covid climate claimed another drop in share and cume. Although daytime listening was again under pressure, breakfast bucked that trend with Mike Perso and Jennifer Hansen lifting 0.7 to 5.1%. Evening with Cameron Daddo was up 1.4 to 8.3% to overtake Nova as the new #1 FM.

Nova 100 6.5% (6.3%)

Cume 884,000 (-77,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 8.3% (5.3%)
Best breakfast 8.3% (4.6%)

Cume dropped below 1m last survey and in this book it has dropped below 900,000. Share crept higher though thanks in part to steady figures after 9am including a lift of 0.9 to 7.6% in drive for Kate, Tim and Joel. Breakfast drifted lower though, down 0.2 to 6.9%. Nova is the new leader 10-17 and remained #1 18-24.

101.1 Fox FM 5.5% (6.6%)

Cume 909,000 (-85,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 8.4% (5.2%)
Best breakfast 8.3% (4.8%)

A concerning drop in share and cume this survey. Breakfast didn’t escape the plunge with share down 1.2 to 4.7%. This is a new station low after breakfast sank to 4.8% during lockdowns. Drive took a knock too, down 1.3 to 7.3%. Fox holds on as #1 25-39.

KIIS 101.1 FM 4.6% (4.6%)

Cume 870,000 (-19,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 6.4% (4.4%)
Best Breakfast 7.1% (4.4%)

Flat survey with little movement. Thanks to falls elsewhere, the new Jase and Lauren show is more competitive – equal with Fox and a point clear of Triple M.

105.1 Triple M 4.0% (4.7%)

Cume 507,000 (-82,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 6.2% (5.0%)
Best breakfast 6.8% (5.2%)

The station now has the lowest cume and the lowest share of all FM players. Cume is threatening to break below 500,000 and station and breakfast share have plunged new depths taking the brand into unchartered waters. The station’s best remains Mick Molloy, but even his numbers were down this survey and he recently quit.

SEN 3.1% (3.7%)

Cume 353,000 (-24,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 3.0% (1.6%)
Best Breakfast 3.2% (2.0%)

The numbers pulled back a little after the good figures in Survey 6. All dayparts took a hit as did weekends. The biggest demo movement was 40-54 where share of audience dropped 2.3 to 5.4%.

Magic 1278 1.5% (1.7%)

Cume 126,000 (+7,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 1.4% (0.2%)
Best Breakfast 0.8% (0.5%)

Amongst the 11 commercial stations in the Melbourne GfK radio aurvey, Magic 1278 was the only one to grow its cume audience. It’s not a massive brag perhaps, but a lift of 7,000, pushes the station closer to 3MP. Share was down marginally though, but breakfast and morning posted modest gains.

3MP 1377 1.0% (1.2%)

Cume 132,000 (-7,000)

After a big cume boost last survey, the station gave back just a small percentage. Breakfast also gave up a little of its recent share gains.

RSN 927 0.6% (0.6%)

Cume: 105,000 (-1,000)

Surveys don’t get much flatter than this. Share was steady and cume dipped just 1,000. A new owner can expect consistency!
