Guardian Australia launches politics newsletter led by Tom McIlroy

Because you can never have enough political newsletters, The Guardian Australia has launched a new daily politics newsletter led by political editor Tom McIlroy, expanding its Canberra coverage with a weekday briefing designed to explain how political decisions affect Australians.

Politics, really will land in subscribers’ inboxes at 5pm AEST each weekday, with McIlroy and Guardian Australia’s Canberra team unpacking one major political story each day and placing it within the broader national context.

The newsletter is pitched beyond the traditional political audience, with coverage spanning household budgets, schools, healthcare, climate and the future of work.

Cutting through Canberra

Rather than following every development of the parliamentary cycle, Politics, really will focus on explaining the significance of decisions being made in Canberra and their impact outside the political bubble.

Readers will also be able to put questions directly to Guardian Australia’s political reporting team through regular AMA editions.

McIlroy will be joined by Canberra reporters Krishani Dhanji, Sarah Basford Canales and Josh Butler, alongside Patrick Commins providing economic analysis.

Senior Guardian Australia reporters covering areas including politics and populism, climate and Indigenous affairs will also contribute.

Building direct reader relationships

The publication says the launch is part of Guardian Australia’s broader investment in building direct relationships between its journalists and readers, with newsletters giving publishers a way to reach audiences beyond social platforms and search.

Politics, really joins the publisher’s existing newsletter offering and adds a more authored approach to its daily political coverage.
