Sports podcasts attract high-value audiences

Commercial Radio & Audio used the June results to highlight the advertising opportunity around sports podcasts before the AFL and NRL finals.

Sports podcast audiences were 81 per cent male, with men aged 25–54 accounting for 57 per cent. Almost one-third lived in households earning more than $150,000 a year.

The data also showed 87 per cent had bought groceries during the previous week, while 66 per cent visited quick-service restaurants each week. About one in five planned to change their mobile provider or health insurance.

Lizzie Young, CEO of Commercial Radio & Audio, said podcast communities continued to bring together engaged audiences.

“Behind every podcast is a community. With 55 per cent of Australians now consuming podcasts monthly, those communities continue to evolve, bringing together highly engaged and influential audiences,” Young said.

“The Ranker maps that landscape and gives the whole industry a verified foundation to act on.”

LiSTNR closes financial year with five top-15 titles

John Kelly, Southern Cross Media Group’s Managing Director, Audio, said LiSTNR secured five places among the country’s top 15 podcasts.

Kelly said several Australian-made titles moved up the Ranker, including Dan Does Footy, Happy Hour with Lucy & Nikki, The Howie Games, Big Small Talk and The Grade Cricketer.

“LiSTNR continued its commercial momentum in June, closing the financial year in an exceptionally strong position and once again driving the podcast market in Australia,” Kelly said.

“By combining the power of SCA and Seven’s assets, advertisers can now leverage unprecedented reach and scale across both audio and video.”

About the Australian Podcast Ranker

The Australian Podcast Ranker is commissioned by Commercial Radio & Audio and published by Triton Digital. It measures the top 300 podcasts listened to by Australians and the top 300 Australian-produced podcasts each month.

Results comply with the IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines. The audience profile figures were sourced from Triton Digital’s Demos+ Australian Survey Data, covering the first quarter of 2024 to the fourth quarter of 2025.

The finding that 55 per cent of Australians listen to podcasts monthly came from Edison Research’s The Infinite Dial 2026. That study covers Australians aged 10 and over.
