Vale: Seven foreign affairs commentator, Dr Keith Suter

He passed away in hospital at the age of 77.

Seven is mourning the loss of one of its most respected voices, with foreign affairs commentator Dr Keith Suter passing away in hospital at the age of 77.

The network confirmed the news, remembering Suter as a calm, trusted guide through some of the most complex global events of the past two decades.

Seven’s Director of Morning TV, Sarah Stinson, notified staff of his passing in an internal note, paying tribute to his intellect, steadiness and presence across Sunrise and the network’s coverage.

“It is with great sadness that I share the news that our friend and colleague, Dr Keith Suter, passed away peacefully in hospital last night.

Keith has been part of the Sunrise and Seven family for many years: the most brilliant mind, a calm and trusted voice on some of the most complex stories in our world, and a joy to work with behind the scenes.

He helped explain wars, elections and global crisis upon crisis, but he always did it with measure, so people felt safe.

Our thoughts are with his beautiful family.”

Dr Keith Suter

A trusted guide on global affairs

Suter, who held three doctorates and chaired several international bodies, became one of Australia’s most recognisable foreign-policy analysts. Across television, radio and public commentary, he was known for grounding discussions in fact rather than theatre, earning a reputation among colleagues as a fact-anchored analyst rather than a rhetorical commentator.

Throughout his career, Suter became a go-to source for viewers seeking clarity on international issues, particularly during periods of conflict, elections and global crises.

Sharing the news on Facebook, 7NEWS wrote Suter was “being remembered as a trusted voice on some of the most complex stories in the world.”

To honour his contribution, Weekend Sunrise will air a special tribute this Saturday, celebrating Suter’s work as a commentator and his role in helping Australians make sense of international affairs.
