SPA makes the appointment to support producers navigating complex global environments.

Screen Producers Australia (SPA) has appointed Samantha Turi as its new director of commercial, strengthening the organisation’s ability to support producers navigating complex global rights and financing environments.

Turi joins SPA from Matchbox Pictures, where she most recently served as director of business and legal affairs.

During her 12 years in the Australian television production industry, Turi has held a range of senior commercial roles. She advised on rights negotiations and deal structuring across premium scripted and unscripted productions.

Prior to her time at Matchbox Pictures, Turi held business affairs and legal positions at Playmaker Media and FremantleMedia Australia. In these roles, she built extensive experience in contract negotiation, intellectual property frameworks, and commercial risk management.

Leading commercial advocacy

In her new role, Turi will lead the commercial advocacy and member support work for SPA. She will provide strategic guidance on commercial deal-making, regulatory considerations, and emerging industry trends.

Turi will work closely with producers, commissioners, financiers, and government stakeholders to strengthen commercial outcomes for Australian production businesses.

Navigating market consolidation

SPA chief executive Matthew Deaner said the appointment arrives at a pivotal time. Producers are responding to shifting global commissioning models and increasing market consolidation, more than ever.

“Samantha brings deep commercial expertise and a strong understanding of the practical business realities facing Australian producers,” Deaner said.

“Her experience advising on complex production agreements and rights arrangements will enhance SPA’s capacity to support members in building sustainable businesses and accessing new opportunities in the international marketplace.”

Supporting progressive deal-making

Turi said she looks forward to contributing to initiatives that strengthen the commercial environment for independent producers.

“Australian producers are operating in a rapidly evolving global market, and strong commercial frameworks are essential to long-term sustainability,” Turi said. “I’m excited to join SPA and work strategically and collaboratively with members to support progressive deal-making and future growth across the industry.”

The appointment reflects the ongoing focus SPA places on delivering practical member value.

The organisation continues to advocate for policy and market settings that enable Australian screen businesses to thrive locally and internationally.
