Snapchat adds Spotify-powered music sharing to Snap Map

Snapchat has launched Now Playing, a new Spotify integration that lets users share the music they're listening to directly on Snap Map, as the platform looks to deepen social discovery and engagement around music.

The feature rolls out globally from today wherever Spotify and Snapchat are available, with Canada to follow. It allows Snapchat users to connect their Spotify account, control who can see their listening activity and discover new music through friends' activity on the map.

The launch builds on the popularity of Snap Map, which Snapchat says attracts more than 450 million monthly users, adding a new layer of personal expression to one of the app's most-used features.

Turning music into a social signal

Now Playing lets users see what friends are listening to in real time on Snap Map. Tapping a track opens related Spotlight videos with the same sound, launches the song in Spotify, or lets users save it directly to their Spotify Liked Songs.

Users can also save tracks from Spotlight videos and Sound Pages without leaving Snapchat.

Snapchat Head of Music Manny Adler said the feature was designed to make music discovery more personal by connecting it to existing friendships.

"Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer," said Snapchat Head of Music, Manny Adler. "Now Playing adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know.”

Privacy controls built in

Users can connect their Spotify account through Snap Map, Sounds, friend profiles or the app's Settings menu.

Once linked, they can decide who can see their listening activity by choosing from Friends, Friends on the Map, Select Friends, or No one.

The feature is designed to give users control over sharing while making music recommendations feel more organic by relying on trusted social connections rather than algorithms alone.

Australian focus on music discovery

Snap's Country General Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Ryan Ferguson, said the feature reflects how Australians already use Snap Map to stay connected with friends.

"From AC/DC to Dom Dolla, Australians have always had some of the most passionate - and unpredictable - music tastes in the world," said Ryan Ferguson, Country General Manager, ANZ at Snap. “Millions of Australians connect on Snap Map each month, and Now Playing taps into something that already happens naturally between friends: sharing a song, being surprised by what someone's into, discovering something new because someone you trust is listening to it. Snap Map is already where Australians share their world with the people they're closest to - now they can share the soundtrack to it as well.”
