The Australian Data and Insights Association (ADIA) and The Research Society (TRS) are pushing to merge into a single peak body as AI, technology and economic pressures reshape Australia’s research and insights sector.
The proposed organisation would represent research, data and insights companies, professionals and users of market and social research. If members approve the deal, the new body is set to formally commence on 1 July 2027.
Members to vote on merger
ADIA and TRS have explored a potential merger since late 2025. The organisations established a committee to undertake independent consultation, financial analysis, international research and due diligence.
Both boards unanimously endorsed the proposed merger model in June. Online member voting will run from 5 to 16 October, with the result set to be announced at both organisations’ annual general meetings on 18 November.
Josephine Foti, president of ADIA, said the industry’s changing environment had made the case for consolidation more urgent.

“With rapid advancements in AI and other technology, and the challenging economic environment, there has never been a more critical moment to deliver a single, stronger industry voice for our members.
“By merging the ADIA and TRS, we’re able to create a single, unified association, giving our industry more weight, more resources and one clear voice - at exactly the time our sector needs it most.”
One body for companies and professionals
The merger would bring together organisations that have separately represented the sector for more than three decades. TRS has focused on research professionals and accreditation, while ADIA has represented research, data and insights organisations.
ADIA says it represents more than 85 Australian companies employing more than 5,000 people. It estimates the industry generates more than $4 billion in economic activity each year.
TRS has more than 1,600 members and more than 150 corporate partners. It also administers the industry’s Code of Professional Behaviour and Qualified Professional Researcher accreditation.
Ellen Baron, president of The Research Society, said the proposal would give members access to a larger combined organisation.
“This merger presents an opportunity for TRS and ADIA members to become part of a new, larger and stronger entity for our industry. Our vision is to create a combined association that is innovative, collaborative and adopts high standards of ethics, quality and professional development, while continuing to provide the very best member services.”
Industry standards to remain
Existing standards and accreditation programs would continue under the new organisation. These include the Code of Professional Behaviour, QPR accreditation, Privacy Code, ISO quality standards and Trust Mark.
The new body would also provide education, member services and industry guidance. Its remit would include standards, knowledge sharing, innovation, business development and advocacy.
Membership would be open to individuals, companies and client organisations with an interest in market and social research.
