Daniel ‘Smithy’ Smith has been appointed Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) North Queensland content director, covering the Cairns, Townsville, and Mackay markets and including Hit Queensland’s Cliffo and Gabi, Triple M’s Breakfast with Tammy Barker & Bodge in Cairns, Townsville’s Pricey for Breakfast and Mackay’s Jay and Dave.

SCA head of content regional, Blair Woodcock made the announcement this morning saying: “It’s great to have Smithy back in the SCA regional content team. He’s got a great eye for talent, a passion for creating strong content that connects with local communities and he’s just an all-round good bloke. He’s been around regional radio for over 20 years and knows his stuff.”

Most recently, Smith has been on air in Townsville and prior to this, was Queensland state content director for SCA before leaving radio to pursue other opportunities.

“While leaving radio full time, Smithy never let it go completely, working for community radio stations throughout Western Australia and Queensland where he’s been based while working for Resonate Radio, including its Australian and international stations,” Woodcock said.

“Smithy was working in Townsville back in 2011 when Cyclone Yasi hit and understands the importance of local radio, as he housed all the announcers and their studios at his family home while the studios were evacuated. He gets local radio, and he understands North Queensland.”

Smith said he was wrapped to be working with the team in North Queensland.

“The love these guys have for radio is amazing. From the days of making pirate radio in my bedroom as a kid in Barcaldine to being paid to work in radio – well, most of time! – is just a pleasure,” he said.

Smith starts as SCA North Queensland content director on Tuesday May 3.
