Box Office: Bullet Train falls from the top in quiet week

This weekend, the Australian box office made $5.57 million, down -11% on last week’s $6.26 million.

For the first time in six weeks, Sony’s Bullet Train starring Brad Pitt has fallen from the top spot, placing third in the box office charts bringing in $600k this past weekend.

Stealing the top spot in its debut week was Indian-Hindi fantasy action film, Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva. The film serves as the first instalment of a planned trilogy, which is planned to be part of a cinematic universe titled Astraverse. In its first week, the film clocked over $900k.

Roadshow’s After Ever Happy took the second top spot in its first week. Directed by Castille Landon, the film is based on the 2015 novel by Anna Todd and is the fourth instalment in the After film series. 

Psychological horror film, Orphan: First Kill, claimed the fourth spot in its second week. The film serves as a prequel to the 2009 film Orphan and stars Isabelle Fuhrman reprising her role from the previous film.

In its 16th week, Top Gun: Maverick has still maintained a spot in the top five, falling from second to fifth. The film has grossed over $91 million to date. 

Falling out of the box office top five this past week were Three Thousand Years of Longing and Spider-Man: No Way Home

#1, Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva, $903,782

In its first week, the film averaged $6,899 across 131 screens to bring in over $900k. Drawing inspiration from stories in Hindu mythology, the film follows Shiva, an orphan with pyrokinetic powers who discovers that he is an astra, a weapon of enormous energy. 

#2, After Ever Happy, $780,595

In its debut week, After Ever Happy averaged $2,432 across 321 screens. The film stars Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, reprising their roles as Tessa Young and Hardin Scott, respectively. A sequel, After Everything is already in production.

#3, Bullet Train, $600,547

In its sixth week, Bullet Train, directed by David Leitch averaged $1,814 across 331 screens to bring in over $600k. In addition to Pitt, the film stars Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, Benito A. Martínez Ocasio, and Sandra Bullock. So far, the action comedy has cashed in over $11 million.

 

#4, Orphan: First Kill, $572,938

The sequel to the 2009 film, Orphan brought in an average of $2,665 across 215 screens in its second week on screens. To date, the film has grossed $1.6 million.

#5, Top Gun: Maverick, $472,888

Tom Cruise stars alongside Jennifer ConnellyVal Kilmer, Miles Teller, Glen Powell and Jon Hamm, in the sequel to the original 1986 film. The film averaged $1,938 across 244 screens and has grossed over $91 million, making it the third highest-grossing movie of all time in Australia.
