Spotify has launched Running Mode, a new personalised fitness feature that creates tailored running sessions based on a user's workout goals, music preferences and preferred pace.

The feature is rolling out from today to Spotify Premium users on iOS across Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and Sweden, marking the streaming giant's latest push to deepen personalisation beyond music discovery.

Available through Spotify's Fitness Hub, Running Mode is designed to reduce the time users spend searching for playlists by automatically generating workout soundtracks matched to their chosen activity and tempo.

Personalised workouts meet personalised playlists

Users can choose from 25 curated running presets before customising workout type, including interval, steady or pyramid sessions, alongside duration, beats per minute (BPM) and music preferences.

Spotify then builds a soundtrack designed to match the selected pace, transitioning between tracks to maintain momentum throughout the workout.

The company said Running Mode "transforms playlists into running sessions tailored to your goals, music taste, and tempo."

According to Spotify, the feature is intended to support a range of activities, from race training and casual jogging through to brisk walks, while helping users "spend less time hunting for the right music and more time moving."

Audio coaching joins the mix

Running Mode also includes optional English-language audio coaching, offering prompts and encouragement during workouts without interrupting the listening experience.

Spotify describes the feature as "like a supportive friend running alongside you, offering timely cues and motivation without getting in the way of your music."

The launch builds on Spotify's broader fitness offering, which already includes Peloton classes and creator workout content available on the platform.

Building on Spotify's personalisation strategy

Spotify said Running Mode reflects growing demand for more personalised fitness experiences, noting that fitness-related prompts have become among the most popular uses of its Prompted Playlists feature.

The company said the new experience is designed to combine workout goals with individual listening habits so "every run feels more energising and uniquely yours."

The feature is available now for eligible Spotify Premium users on iOS in supported markets, including Australia.
