ABC News Breakfast has been named the winner of the 2025 Our Watch Award for Excellence in Reporting on Violence Against Women, announced during the Walkley Foundation’s Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism in Sydney.

The team received recognition for their week-long coverage titled Not Just A Number, which focused on men’s violence against women. The special programming featured victim-survivor voices and aimed to elevate the public discourse around the systemic nature of gendered violence.

Regan Mitchell, Director of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy at Our Watch, presented the award and praised the reporting for setting “a new standard for nuanced, accurate and courageous reporting.” She noted that while media coverage has improved, much remains to be done, particularly in ensuring visibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

“The media has a unique power, privilege and responsibility to tell the stories of all women accurately and with integrity,” Mitchell said. “We challenge media professionals to prioritise this preventable crisis with urgency.”

The award saw a record number of entries in 2025. Our Watch has recognised journalism in this category since 2013, integrating the accolade into the Walkley Foundation’s mid-year awards from 2019 onwards.

Past winners have included journalists from Nine Entertainment, ABC, and news.com.au, with works spanning podcasts, investigative series, and longform features.

Our Watch is a national leader in the prevention of violence against women and their children, working to address the cultural and structural drivers of such violence across Australia.
