Where to watch the Golden Globe winners: Disney+, Netflix and Binge/Foxtel lead

Golden Globes

Also check out some winning movies and TV on Prime Video and Apple TV+

After no telecast last year and an overhaul of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since then, the Golden Globe Awards returned this month.

In the US the awards were shown on NBC and were the final telecast in the broadcaster’s current contract. Will they have a TV home next year?

In Australia the awards show was shown on Stan, moving across from its former home on Foxtel.

The awards show used to be a massive ratings winner for its US broadcaster and had over 20m+ viewers for close to a decade early in the 2000s. However, persistent criticism of different aspects of the Golden Globes didn’t help and the US audience dwindled to under 7m in 2021. Preliminary data from the 2023 awards show indicates the figure will be similar this year.

In Australia Stan doesn’t release audience figures so it will be impossible to gauge the size of the audience.

What the Golden Globes did well this year was celebrate some wonderful movies and TV from the previous 12 months. Below is a list of where viewers can track down the winning content with details of how much it will cost you. If you have subscriptions to Disney+, Netflix and Binge or Foxtel you are in luck.

Golden Globe winners: Movies

The Banshees of Inersherin: The movie was only recently released in Australia, so it is too early to find it on a streaming service. The film picked up three awards and listening to the acceptance speeches was a good reminder there is actually comedy mixed in amongst the more unsettling parts of what seems to be very dark drama at times.

Everything Everywhere All at Once: Also a multiple winner with two awards. The movie has been in cinemas in Australia since April 2022 and is available to stream on Binge, Foxtel and Prime Video.

The Fabelmans: Another multiple winner with the latest from Steven Spielberg picking up two awards. The movie has only just made it into cinemas and is not yet available on a streaming service.

TAR: Cate Blanchett is getting rave reviews for her role in this movie which makes it into cinemas late January in Australia. Blanchett’s Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture could be a forerunner to other wins including another Oscar for the Aussie movie queen. It will be a little while before TAR makes it to a streaming platform.

Argentina, 1985: The winner of the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language is available to watch to subscribers to Prime Video.

Movies of Eddie Murphy: During the awards ceremony the US comedian and actor was presented with the 2023 Cecil B. DeMille Award. You can find Eddie Murphy movies or comedy specials on most streaming platforms.
Netflix is a good place to start with a wealth of material with Murphy classics including Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America and the Shrek franchise for starters. Many of them also show up on other platforms including Stan which also has his great performance in the 2006 movie Dreamgirls.

Movies that picked up one Golden Globe each:

Wakanda Forever: Will be available later this year with other Marvel movies on Disney+.

Babylon: Just making its way into cinemas so will be a little while before it is available to stream.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio: The Best Animation winner is available to Netflix subscribers.

Elvis: Although it has been in cinemas for some time, Baz Luhrmann’s latest is only available as a rental on multiple streaming platforms.

RRR: The hit Indian drama is one of the many great moves from that country available on Netflix.

Golden Globe winners: Television

Abbott Elementary: After seven nominations and three wins at the 2022 Emmy Awards, it is no surprise Abbott Elementary was a multiple winner at the Globes. It walked away with three trophies and you can watch the 24 episodes across two seasons of the comedy on Disney+.

The Bear: Another huge hit for Disney+ with eight episodes set in the kitchen of a diner in Chicago.

Euphoria Season 2: Overlooked by the Hollywood Foreign Press previously, but Zendaya has been awarded for her work in the second season. The HBO series is available to watch on Binge and Foxtel in Australia.

Ozark: Another big awards winner over the course of its run. The Netflix series really helped the streaming platform establish itself as the place for quality TV after the groundwork was laid by series like House of Cards.

Black Bird: The series is an Apple TV+ original and was nominated multiple times in different Golden Globe categories. It won for the amazing performance of Paul Walter Hauser with Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

White Lotus: Another HBO hit series available on Binge and Foxtel. The award went to Jennifer Coolidge for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. (Don’t miss her too in Ryan Murphy’s The Watcher on Netflix.)

The Dropout: Head to Disney+ for the always amazing Amanda Seyfried in the miniseries about Theranos and its founder Elizabeth Holmes.

Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story: Evan Peters picked up the award for his lead role in this disturbing yet fascinating Ryan Murphy series available on Netflix.

Yellowstone: A win for Stan which has this amazingly popular series (although not the prequels which live at Paramount+). Kevin Costner was roasted for not attending the ceremony to collect his award, saying he was unable to travel from his home because the storm conditions rocking California this week.

House of the Dragon: Quite possibly the surprise win of the awards night and a decision that had some people shaking their heads and murmuring WTF? Even team Dragon were surprised with the victory including Aussie actress Milly Alcock who looked very shocked as she stumbled about the stage.

Ryan Murphy – Don’t miss his new series The Watcher on Netflix

Series of Ryan Murphy: Recipient of the Carol Burnett Award. Although Murphy’s work appears on several platforms, but his current projects can all be found on Netflix. Murphy signed a five-year deal with Netflix in 2018 which was worth close to $400m for the Hollywood creative who rose to fame with the hit series Glee. Since Murphy arrived at Netflix his best work has arguably been Halston (with Ewan McGregor as the fashion designer) and the current hit The Watcher with Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale plus the scene-stealing Jennifer Coolidge.
