The Odyssey delivers biggest Australian box office opening of 2026
Christopher Nolan's epic storms the box office, driving the biggest cinema weekend Australia has seen in 2026

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has delivered the biggest opening weekend of any film in Australia this year, generating $13.5 million at the box office and attracting 587,000 admissions across its first four days.
The result marks the strongest opening weekend since A Minecraft Movie debuted in April 2025 and helped drive the biggest overall cinema weekend so far in 2026.
Globally, the film generated US$264 million in its opening weekend, delivering the biggest worldwide opening of Nolan's career and becoming the second-largest IMAX opening ever, behind only Avengers: Endgame.

"Not only has the film delivered the biggest opening of the year, but you will be lucky to get a ticket at some screens until mid-August. What’s also been fascinating to see is the cultural conversation extending well beyond the box office, with audiences taking to social media with tongue-in-cheek posts about watching the film ‘as Nolan intended’."

A record weekend for Australian cinemas
The success of The Odyssey helped push Australian cinemas to more than 1.21 million admissions and $24 million in box-office revenue over the weekend, making it the strongest cinema weekend of 2026 to date.
According to Val Morgan, it was the biggest admissions result and the highest-grossing weekend of the year, supported by a slate that also included Moana, Minions and Monsters, Toy Story 5 and The Invite.
Burbidge said the result highlights cinema's value as a platform for advertisers seeking scale and cultural relevance.
"We’ve consistently talked about Cinema’s ability to drive cultural moments and talkability for brands, and this is just another great example of a key media moment that we know delivers great brand outcomes.
"This exciting period for cinema continues with Spider-Man: Brand New Day on 30 July, already being tipped as a potential contender for the biggest film of the year. From there, audiences can look forward to original content like Digger, The Dog Stars and Wild Horse Nine, alongside established IP with Verity, Clayface, The Hunger Games and Focker in Law. Momentum is set to hit a peak on 17 December with what promises to be a once-in-a-generation moment with DunesDay - Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three hitting cinemas on the same day."
