• WSFM hold on again as #1 FM, Fitzy & Wippa back after mid-year scare

Sydney Radio Ratings 2021: Survey 8
GfK Survey 8, Survey Period: Sunday September 26 to Saturday December 4

UP: Nova 96.9 +1.4
DOWN: 2GB -1.2

2GB 14.5% (15.7%)

Cume: 681,000 (-81,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 14.8% (13.2%)
Best Breakfast 17.9% (14.8%)

Share was down 1.2 overall at the station with breakfast with Ben Fordham dropping 1.3. Not huge moves when you have shares like this Sydney AM station boasts. All dayparts dipped with the exception of Ray Hadley in drive who along with Fordham is enjoying an 18%+ share. Ben Fordham had a huge year with good year-on-year growth and four breakfast surveys over 18%. The station narrowly leads WSFM 55-64 and of course is a clear leader 65+ with share up 2.1 to 31.5%.

WSFM 8.8% (8.1%)

Cume: 796,000 (+32,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 8.9% (7.1%)
Best Breakfast 9.1% (7.4%)

Another survey as Sydney’s #1 FM station with this survey result largely driven by Jonesy and Amanda jumping 1.2 to 9.1% in breakfast, their best numbers since the first two surveys of 2020. Phil O’Neil has proven to be a shrewd investment too with the veteran rock DJ now sitting on a not-to-shabby share of 10.1% with his morning music shift. The station has had a great year, ending on a high. There were a few challenges along the way, but they were all met and the Christmas break shouldn’t pose any sleepless nights about WTF for next year.

KIIS 1065 8.3% (8.0%)

Cume: 1,076,000 (+9,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 9.7% (8.1%)
Best Breakfast 11.3% (9.9%)

While WSFM again has the edge overall, Kyle and Jackie O remain the breakfast FM champs. They have been unbeaten Sydney FM breakfast leaders since one survey in 2018 they dipped to #2. The duo’s highpoint this year was a memorable share of 15.5% in Survey 4, their highest ever breakfast rating. KIIS ends the year #1 25-39 and #2 18-24 and 40-54. Drive hosts Will and Woody should have a good break too after learning that the gap between their show and smoothfm’s #1 drive has shrink to just 0.1.

smoothfm 95.3 7.9% (7.9%)

Cume: 1,000,000 (+37,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 10.8% (8.1%)
Best Breakfast: 8.5% (6.2%)

Everything good this survey can be traced back to the great Glenn Daniel. We celebrate his many contributions to Australian radio was we note the station cume has hit 1,000,000 listeners, all of whom are the better for allowing the breakfast co-host and long-time radio newsman into their lives. Breakfast share was up 0.5 to 5.4%. The only other shift to lift this survey was evening which went up 1.6 to 10.8%. The station 10+ highs for the year were two shares on or above 10% mid-year.

Nova 96.9 6.8% (5.4%)

Cume: 1,012,000 (+32,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 7.7% (6.1%)
Best Breakfast 8.0% (6.4%)

The summer holiday mood here for the content and sales teams must be a lot brighter after survey day. After being the only station to grow cume in Survey 7, Nova has smashed out more cume growth and pushed the audience back over 1m. The recovery has been led by Fitzy and Wippa who were really staring down the barrel mid-year with a share of just 4.0% which has now recovered to 6.9%. The hosts end the year with their best result since the first two surveys of 2020. While station share was down a little 18-24, it now has a lead of 10 points or more against nearest competitors smoothfm and KIIS/WSFM. Nova remains #2 25-39, but has closed the gap between it and #1 KIIS FM.

104.9 Triple M 4.9% (5.4%)

Cume: 548,000 (-14,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 6.1% (4.7%)
Best Breakfast 6.0% (4.9%)

Cume has trended lower again as did 10+ share. Breakfast managed to plateau with MG joining Jess and Pagey. Although the breakfast ratings have stabilised, they remain at close to an all-time low. The final survey for Mick Molloy saw him depart with the station’s highest share – 6.2% – but it was down on recent highs. Station is only competitive 40+, and with men too maybe but we don’t get that breakdown.

104.1 2Day FM 3.8% (3.5%)

Cume: 622,000 (-12,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 5.3% (3.3%
Best Breakfast 4.2% (2.5%)

Stating the obvious, but this is again not where 2Day wants to be. Hard to see things picking up from here, although with less Covid interruptions to lifestyles next year just maybe Hughesy, Ed and Erin could work some magic. The station has posted its second-best share of the year, while breakfast is on its second-lowest for 2021.

2UE 954 2.6% (2.5%)

Cume: 201,000 (-22,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 1.2% (0.6%)
Best Breakfast 1.1% (0.3%)

Nothing much has changed here recently. Looking back over 2021 there has certainly been good growth year-on-year. You would imagine they still need to lift higher to make a commercial difference.

Sky Sports Radio 1.2% (1.3%)

Cume: 138,000 (-34,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 0.9% (0.5%)
Best Breakfast 1.4% (0.4%)

The bottom fell out of breakfast this survey with a 2.2% in Survey 7 turning into just 0.9% this survey. That slump came after five consecutive surveys of improved share. All other dayparts were steady this survey.

SEN 1170 0.5% (0.5%)

Cume: 44,000 (-35,000)

Breakfast with Vossy was down this survey posting its equal-lowest share since the station rebranded. Afternoon with Jimmy Smith [Disclaimer: Mediaweek’s James Manning and Trent Thomas are contributors] remains the station highpoint and only one of two dayparts to lift this survey. The other was drive with Joel and Fletch which was up 0.3 to 0.8%. The new Podcast Ranker out this week is another measure of how the station is performing and serving its specialist audience.
