We Interrupt This Broadcast launches 7.30pm Tuesday, February 28, on Seven and 7plus.

From MAFS to MKR, The Masked Singer to MasterChef, Squid Game to SAS Australia and The Block to The Bachelor; nothing is off limits with a team of more than 25 of Australia’s top comedy writers ensuring We Interrupt This Broadcast is accessible for everyone.

A fast, furious and long-overdue sketch comedy series, We Interrupt This Broadcast reboots and revitalises a long-standing and near-forgotten Australian tradition: taking the piss out of everything, including ourselves.

We Interrupt This Broadcast showcases eight of Australia’s top comedy talent: Christie Whelan Browne, Bridie Connell, Michelle Brasier, Adele Vuko, Duncan Fellows, Greg Larsen, Ben Russell and Bjorn Stewart.

Reflecting on the Australian sense of humour, Vuko said: “We have a broad range of humour that shows our diversity. We’ve traditionally been known as laconic, larrikin underdogs – but even though we are that – we have a lot more heart and soul to show.”

Brasier said: “We don’t have just one sense of humour in Australia, but we don’t like things that are mean spirited.” Connel acknowledged the humour is: “Laid back, dry, delivered with a wink and a good spirit.” Christie concurred Aussies are “self-deprecating” while Bjorn declared it “Cooked. Proper cooked mate”.

Supporting the ensemble cast throughout the series are celebrated screen actors and established comedy performers, including Georgie Parker, Virginia Gay, Lawrence Mooney, Nina Oyama, Ian Roberts, Aaron Gocs, Elliot Loney, Mark Bonanno and Anthony Akroyd.

We Interrupt This Broadcast EP and showrunner, Richard Thorp, said, “Australia has a great tradition of sketch comedy, especially parody, from Graham Kennedy to Fast Forward and The Late Show. More recently there was Comedy Inc. but even that was over 15 years ago.

“After the kind of news we’ve been bombarded with over the last few years, it feels refreshing to make a comedy show that is just about having a laugh, not fretting too much about politics or global events.

We Interrupt This Broadcast is a HELIUM original production for the Seven Network.
