Nine Radio has extended the reach of its major talk stations, 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR, by enabling live streaming via the Apple Watch.
The new smartwatch capability, which requires a cellular-enabled Apple Watch, allows users to listen to Nine Radio’s talk programming directly from their wrist without needing a smartphone. It’s the latest move in Nine’s device ubiquity strategy, catering to listeners seeking mobility and on-the-go access to news, sport, opinion, and entertainment.
The smartwatch app features an intuitive interface adapted for the Apple Watch, with essential now-playing metadata displayed during streams. Users can start listening from the home screen, access stations through Smart Stack, and control playback via the Playing Now interface.
“This is about providing true freedom and flexibility in how our audience consumes audio content,” said Tom Malone, Managing Director of Nine Radio. “Radio used to be on the bench top or side table, then it was in your pocket via your phone, now it’s on your wrist.”
“Listeners can escape all of their screens for a walk or run, or trip to the shops, and still be listening to their favourite news, sport, opinions and entertainment via Nine Radio’s smartwatch app. It’s a seamless and untethered way to stay connected.”
Mia Stern, Head of Digital Growth at Nine Radio, added: “Our strategy is simple — maximise discoverability and accessibility. The new smartwatch apps allow listeners to tune in to their favourite talk radio station anywhere, any time and on any device.”
According to Nine, future updates planned for the app later in 2025 will include on-demand content and AFL-specific streams. Smartwatch integration is also planned for CarPlay by the end of the year.
