New Year’s Eve TV Guide: Sydney fireworks on ABC, but plenty of bang elsewhere too

The ABC is welcoming the New Year with another NYE 2023 concert and fireworks celebration, airing on Sunday from 8:30pm. The coverage is the biggest audience the broadcaster gets every year with over 1m tuning in 12 months ago.

Broadcasting from the Sydney Opera House’s Northern Broadwalk, hosts Charlie Pickering and Zan Rowe will be joined by triple j’s Concetta Caristo.

ABC TV’s New Year’s Eve programming starts at 7.30pm with an encore screening of The Yearly With Charlie Pickering. Charlie wraps up 2023 with Margaret Pomeranz, Roy and HG, Rhys Nicholson, referendums and mushroom deaths.

After a Welcome to Country at 8.30pm, ABC and iview will screen a preview of Muster Dogs Series 2. There will also be a behind-the-curtain look at what goes into making the best fireworks show in the world.

New Year’s Eve TV: 9pm Fireworks

The 9pm fireworks will then go bang. This year the show is branded Calling Country fireworks with a celebration of sky, land, and sea. Presented by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists through music, dance and illustration. Produced by We Are Warriors.

From 9:10pm the live music begins with a NYE concert that will showcase Jessica Mauboy, Genesis Owusu, King Stingray, Confidence Man, Angie McMahon, Mark Seymour, Grentperez and the performer now known as the Queen of New Year’s Eve, Casey Donovan.

Midnight Fireworks

The midnight fireworks are again promising something special with pyrotechnics launched from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House and iconic landmarks. Once again a special fireworks soundtrack will be provided by KIIS 1065.

The NYE 2023 concert will broadcast across ABC TV, local ABC Radio and streamed live on ABC iview.

Melbourne fireworks go bang,or choose a movie or SBS doco

Nine: If you want a Sydney Harbour alternative for a change head to Nine where the Melbourne New Year’s Eve midnight fireworks show will be broadcast on Nine across Victoria and elsewhere on 9Now. Earlier in the night Nine is screening the movies Hairspray and Pitch Perfect.

Seven: The channel will broadcast the BBL clash between the Strikers and the Stars. After the cricket, the 2011 movie New Year’s Eve will screen which features a star-studded cast including Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Effron and Robert De Niro.

10: The channel will feature a triple bill of movies running from 6pm starting with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from last year. That will be followed by First Wives Club from 1996. Then Hustlers from 2019 with Jennifer Lopez as a New York stripper ready to turn the tables on her Wall Street clients.

SBS: A night of musical docos on the channel starting with Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives at 7.30pm. A music concert from 1990 follows with Billy Joel: Live at Yankee Stadium. The third of the music docos is Kenny Rogers: All in For the Gambler which is his Nashville farewell concert in 2017. Guest artists singing with Rogers include Dolly Parton, Chris Stapleton, Lionel Richie, Reba McEntire, Little Big Town, Lady A, and Idina Menzel.
