LiSTNR goes deeper with ‘Beyond Tough’, focusing on the reality of being an Australian Sports Icon.
This five part podcast series redefines what it means to be tough in Australian sport. Hosted by actor, author and former NRL player Matt Nable, goes beyond the wins and statistics to explore the personal battles and emotional resilience of some of the country’s most recognised athletes.
More behind the surface
Across five episodes, Nable sits down with AFL ruckman Brodie Grundy and sporting greats including rugby league premiership winner Wade Graham, cricketer and commentator Brad Haddin, Olympic swimming champion Cate Campbell OAM, and rugby league forward Aaron Woods. Each guest shares moments that tested them far beyond the field.
From Grundy admitting he “didn’t have love for the game” early in his career, to Graham recalling how the ASADA scandal affected his family, to Haddin reflecting on his daughter’s cancer diagnosis, the series gives a raw and personal look at the realities behind success.
Campbell, meanwhile, opens up about her brother’s near-death experience during the London Olympics, while Woods discusses his own struggles with anxiety.
Michael James, LiSTNR’s Head of Sport, said the partnership with Volkswagen has allowed the platform to tell stories that show the strength behind vulnerability.
“LiSTNR is proud to partner with Volkswagen to bring listeners inspiring stories of resilience from some of Australia’s sporting legends,” James said.
“We all know their stats and big wins, but these stories dig deeper into the determination, the setbacks, and the strength it takes to bounce back stronger.”
Beyond Tough challenges traditional ideas of what toughness looks like highlighting that resilience is as much about emotional strength as physical endurance.
