Barack Obama is bringing Larry David back to TV and his new show sounds pretty, pretty, pretty good

Barack Obama: ‘I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders but nothing has prepared me for Larry David.’

Well, here’s a credit you don’t see every day: executive producer, former U.S. president, Barack Obama.

Then again, Larry David was never one for convention.

The Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld creator has signed on with HBO to deliver an as-yet-untitled sketch comedy series about American history, alongside the 44th president of the United States.

Helping steer the ship behind the scenes? The Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground.

Larry David meets The Obama’s

The yet-to-be-titled limited series will commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026, albeit through David’s unmistakably irreverent lens.

But, if David’s history is anything to go by, this series is expected to be pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

A new collaboration between an old team

The series reunites David with long-time collaborator Jeff Schaffer (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld), who will co-write, executive produce, and direct, yadda, yadda, yadda.

The series will include appearances from some Curb cast members and high-profile guest stars.

It’s not a Curb reunion without Susie.

HBO confirmed that Higher Ground principals Barack and Michelle Obama will serve as executive producers alongside David, Schaffer, Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis.

Amy Gravitt, EVP and Head of HBO and Max Comedy Programming, said the series was an opportunity to reframe history through David’s characteristically dry comedic style: “It’s hard to remember a time before Curb, or without Larry David’s perspective on modern life. We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a glimpse at our shared history as we celebrate our Semiquincentennial.”

On to higher ground

So, for those not in the know, the decision to pair with David isn’t really that surprising for Higher Ground.

The company has ostensibly made a concerted push to partner with marquee names across entertainment, leveraging its Netflix relationship and now expanding into HBO’s prestige comedy slate.

For HBO, bringing David back into its ecosystem in the post-Curb era ensures ongoing audience engagement while offering advertisers a fresh but familiar face.

Barack Obama acknowledged the unpredictability of working with the comedian, joking: “I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders… Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”

Oh, to be a fly on the wall.

David, known for turning even the most niche neurosis into comedic gold, added: “After a violent allergic reaction to a foam party, I yearned to return to my life as a beekeeper… Alas, my bees mysteriously vanished. And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television.”
