How broadcasters will observe the National Day of Mourning

ABC, Seven, Nine, 10 and SBS will pause on-air at 7.01pm AEDT, with coverage varying by market.

Australians will be asked to pause at 7.01pm AEDT on Thursday, 22 January, as broadcasters mark the National Day of Mourning for the victims of the Bondi terror attack.

The minute of silence comes ahead of a national memorial service at the Sydney Opera House, organised by Chabad of Bondi under the theme, ‘Light Will Win: A Gathering of Unity and Remembrance’.

When is the minute of silence?

The Australian Government has invited Australians to observe a one-minute silence at 7.01pm AEDT on Thursday, 22 January.

How each network will cover it

ABC

The ABC will observe the minute of silence across television and radio at the time it falls in each state and territory, including during local news programming.

• 7.01pm – NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, ACT
• 6.31pm – South Australia
• 6.01pm – Queensland
• 5.31pm – Northern Territory
• 4.01pm – Western Australia

On ABC News Channel, coverage of the Opera House service will air live across the early evening, with the minute of silence observed at 7.01pm AEDT.

Seven

Seven has confirmed it will extend its news coverage to observe the minute of silence.

Nine

Nine’s coverage will see Tennis Australia observe the minute of silence at the start of the Australian Open broadcast on the Nine Network, airing from 7.00pm AEDT after the evening news.

In Queensland and South Australia, the minute of silence will be carried within local 9News bulletins, drawn from the Opera House event. The full Opera House service will also screen on 9Go! (check local guides for times).

10

10 will observe the minute of silence on air at 7.01pm AEDT, live across all markets.

The Opera House event will also be available to stream on 10 from 7.00pm AEDT.

SBS & NITV

SBS and NITV will observe the minute of silence at 7.01pm AEDT across national television and radio broadcasts, livestreamed via SBS On Demand and across multiple SBS Radio services.

These channels will display an on-screen notification directing audiences to SBS or NITV in the lead-up to the minute of silence.

Other SBS television channels will display on-screen notifications directing viewers to the main channel ahead of the commemoration.

Sky News Australia

Sky News Australia will broadcast the Opera House service live from 7.00pm AEDT, hosted by Sharri Markson.

Regular programming, including The Bolt Report and Sharri, will resume from Monday, 26 January.

YouTube

The Opera House service will also be livestreamed via the Chabad of Bondi YouTube channel.
