The Social Reckoning opened in eighth at the Australian box office, taking $480,000 over its first weekend as Verity held the No. 1 spot.

The Aaron Sorkin film’s October 8–11 result follows a fifth-place debut in the United States, where it also struggled to attract audiences.

Written and directed by Sorkin, the “companion piece” to 2010’s The Social Network stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong. It follows the Facebook whistleblower scandal that exposed the platform’s harmful practices.

Verity holds the lead

Verity, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, earned another $2.16 million over the weekend, lifting its Australian total to $8.11 million.

New release Other Mommy opened in second place with $1.6 million. The horror film stars Jessica Chastain as a paranormal entity that takes on the appearance of a young girl’s mother.

Resident Evil placed third with $905,000, bringing its cumulative Australian earnings to $12 million.

Heart of the Beast followed in fourth with $886,000, bringing its running total to $6.27 million. Forgotten Island completed the top five, collecting $744,000 to reach $6.75 million.
