1. How to Train Your Dragon
The live action remake of the 2010 DreamWorks animated film has retained the top spot, drawing in $4,964,967 across 520 screens. Globally, the film has made US$358.2M so far and of that, US$197.7M was from 81 overseas markets, according to Deadline. Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer is at 77%.
Synopsis: Hiccup, a Viking teenager, comes from a village where people hunt dragons. He meets an injured dragon named Toothless and chooses not to harm it. Over time, Hiccup and Toothless form a connection and he works to change his village’s view of dragons and seeks to end the conflict between the two groups.

2. 28 Years Later
The third installment in the 28 Days Later series, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, has had a strong first week, grossing $2,566,690 across 348 screens. From Deadline, globally, the film has made US$60M, with US$30M of that being the international box office, slightly above projections. The Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer sits at 89%.
Synopsis: It’s been almost three decades (28 years, if you’re counting) since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory. Still living in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amid the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of them decides to venture into the dark heart of the mainland, he soon discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.

3. Materialists
The romantic/comedy, written and directed by Celine Song, dropped down a spot from last week, making $1,400,376 across 361 screens. Dakota Johnson stars as ambitious matchmaker Lucy who finds herself caught up in a love triangle with Pedro Pascal’s Harry and Chris Evans who plays Lucy’s ex John. The A24 film made $12million in its US debut according to Variety and has an 82% Tomatometer rating.
Synopsis: Lucy, a matchmaker in New York, helps others find partners but has not found one for herself. She finds herself drawn to Harry, a wealthy and seemingly perfect match, while also harbouring feelings for her ex, John, a struggling actor.

4. Lilo & Stitch
The family film has dropped another spot from #3 to #4, after starting its run with three weeks at number one at the top of the Australian box office. Lilo & Stitch made $1,141,723, a -36% jump down from last weekend’s $1,788,901. On a global scale, the live action Disney remake is sitting at US$910.3M worldwide, and is expected to hit US$1B according to Deadline. It has a Rotten Tomatoes aggregate review score of 71%.
Synopsis: Lilo, a lonely young girl living on Kauaʻi, Hawaii, adopts a creature she believes is a dog. The creature, called Stitch, is a genetic experiment who escapes from another planet and arrives on Earth. Lilo, through care and commitment to the idea of family (Ohana), helps Stitch change his behaviour and he begins to learn what it means to care for others

5. Elio
Elio, while still sitting within the top 5, has had the lowest box office opening for a Pixar movie ever. Despite the low opening, the film has a strong Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%. In Australia, it grossed $764,026 across 330 screens. Globally, it has made US$35M, with US$14M of that being from international markets.
Synopsis: Elio, an underdog with an active imagination, finds himself inadvertently beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s ambassador to the rest of the universe, he starts to form new bonds with eccentric aliens while discovering who he’s truly meant to be.
