Australian children’s author Craig Silvey charged with child exploitation

His arrest has triggered amarketing freeze and school bans.

The Australian arts sector faces a severe reputational crisis following the arrest of author Craig Silvey. The celebrated writer of Jasper Jones and Runt appeared in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where prosecutors charged him with possessing and distributing child exploitation material.

These allegations have triggered an immediate containment strategy across the publishing, film, and education sectors.

Police Raid Allegations

Western Australian Police executed a search warrant at Silvey’s Fremantle home on Monday, January 12. According to reports from Sky News, prosecutors allege detectives discovered the author “actively engaging” with other offenders online during the raid.

Police seized multiple electronic devices for forensic examination.

Silvey faces two charges: one count of possessing child exploitation material and one count of distributing child exploitation material.

The alleged offences reportedly occurred between January 7 and January 9, 2026. The magistrate granted bail with strict conditions, including a $100,000 personal undertaking and a $100,000 surety.

Publisher Freezes All Marketing

The timing presents a logistical nightmare for publisher Allen & Unwin. The company moved swiftly to ringfence its exposure. In a statement released Tuesday, the publisher confirmed a total pause on all promotional activity for Silvey’s catalogue, calling the allegations “deeply distressing.”

This freeze impacts more than backlist titles. Silvey released a sequel to his bestselling children’s book in September 2025, titled Runt and the Diabolical Dognapping. The trade positioned this title as a major back-to-school release.

The marketing blackout effectively strands substantial inventory and cancels planned author appearances.

Education and Screen Sectors React

The commercial damage extends to the education sector, a lucrative pillar of Silvey’s income. Jasper Jones has served as a staple text in Australian high schools for over a decade.

The West Australian reports that WA Education Minister Sabine Winton ordered public schools to stop using Silvey’s books immediately following the charges.

The film industry also faces uncertainty. The 2024 film adaptation of Runt grossed over $5 million locally and secured international distribution. While the film completed its primary theatrical run, the severity of the charges places future broadcast rights and streaming deals in jeopardy.

StudioCanal has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the status of these agreements.

A Rapid Fall from Grace

The speed of Silvey’s fall has rattled the industry. In October 2025, Silvey served as the guest of honour to present the “Craig Silvey Award for Young Writers” for the City of Subiaco.

His public image relied heavily on themes of youth protection and mentorship. The allegations of online engagement with paedophile networks stand in stark contrast to this persona.

Silvey will reappear in court on February 10.

The industry now watches to see if the freeze on his work becomes a permanent erasure.
