Audible launches cheaper plan to to win new users

The new plan launches simultaneously across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and France.

Audible has launched a new Standard membership tier in Australia, introducing a lower-priced subscription option aimed at attracting lighter listeners and first-time audiobook users.

The new plan launches simultaneously across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and France.

Priced at AUD $8.99 per month in Australia, the Standard tier offers one audiobook each month from Audible’s full catalogue, alongside unlimited listening from a curated selection of Audible Originals and selected premium titles.

A cheaper entry point for new listeners

The new tier is positioned as a more accessible entry point for people exploring audiobooks for the first time or looking for a lower-cost option.

Subscribers can select one audiobook each month and retain access to that title for as long as their membership remains active.

The plan also includes unlimited ad-free listening to a curated catalogue of titles, including Audible Originals and nearly 200 popular titles previously available through Wondery+.

These include series such as Dr. Death, American Scandal and Business Wars.

Cynthia Chu

Cynthia Chu, Chief Financial and Growth Officer at Audible, said the move reflects changing listening habits.

“The launch of our Standard tier reflects Audible’s ongoing commitment to serving the diverse preferences and listening habits of story-lovers everywhere,” Chu said.

“By expanding our membership options, we’re maximising access for lighter listeners while enabling publishers and creators to reach new audiences.”

Growth in early testing

Audible said early testing of the Standard plan in Australia and the UK delivered strong results, with double-digit growth in new member sign-ups compared with previous subscription offers.

The company expects the new tier to bring millions of additional users into its global audiobook ecosystem over the next year.

Premium tier remains unchanged

Audible’s Premium Plus membership remains available in Australia at AUD $16.45 per month.

That plan includes one monthly credit for any audiobook, plus unlimited listening across a broader Plus Catalogue.

Audible said the two-tier model is designed to give listeners more flexibility depending on listening habits and budget.
