TV Demand: Satire shows reign on both sides of the Tasman

TV Demand

• In Australia, Saturday Night Live took first place

This week, Ted Lasso has topped the Digital Originals Australia chart, after placing #1 in all four TV Demand charts last week.

In the show, American Ted Lasso is a coach of college-level American soccer team. He finds himself recruited to coach an English Premier League team, AFC Richmond, despite having absolutely no experience in that level of the game.

Season two explores the titular character’s mental health and drills down into what makes each character tick.

This week Ted Lasso scored 22.97 points above market average in Australia and 14.93 points above average in New Zealand.

On the New Zealand Digital Original chart, Only Murders In The Building has finally taken top spot. The show follows three strangers (played by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with a true-crime podcast. When there is a murder in their building, the neighbors start their own show while they investigate the crime themselves.

This week Only Murders In The Building scored 21.5 points above market average in Australia and 15.27 in New Zealand.

Overall it’s the reign of satire shows on both sides of the Tasman.

In Australia, Saturday Night Live took first place, with Aussies tuning in to the highly publicised episode featuring Kim Kardashian West. With people unsure of what to expect, she took no prisoners during her opening monologue – going in for the kill on her ex-husband Kanye West, family members, and even dropping some OJ Simpson jokes.

Over in New Zealand, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver won out, with people tuning after last week’s update that Minnesota business Zumbrota Ford taking on and creating an ad for their business written by the Last Week Tonight writers. The video quickly went viral, even getting a shout out from Ford CEO Jim Farley.
