Titus O’Reily has announced that he’ll be leaving Channel 10‘s The Cheap Seats as the show’s regular sports correspondent. He leaves the show to pursue other projects.

The announcement was made on Tuesday night’s episode, with O’Reily joking that the reason he was leaving was that “I’ve got to go to jail for a few years.”

On a more serious note, O’Reily told viewers that “I just want to say I have absolutely loved this show and it’s going to go from strength to strength for years. I think it’s absolutely fantastic. I want to thank not only you two [hosts Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald], but the Working Dog crew and all people that work here. Most importantly, I want to thank the makeup people, because not since the space race have so many people worked on one project, to get this face on TV. It’s a modern miracle.”

In response, McDonald said that “On behalf of all of those people and the viewers at home, we just wanted to say thank you for everything that you’ve brought to the desk. It’s been an absolute pleasure laughing alongside you, but also getting to know you.

“You’re such a wonderful person. We wish you and your family all the best – and we wish you a full and total exoneration from that independent investigation,” joked McDonald.

Earlier this year, Mediaweek spoke to O’Reily about bringing his Sports Bizarre podcast – hosted alongside Triple M’s Mick Molloy – to life and the perks of working across multiple platforms.

“Mick and I both love bizarre sports stories – we’ve done them on The Front Bar, we’ve done them on radio, but podcasting lends itself to doing these long, involved stories. That’s where it came from,” says O’Reily.

“We just also liked the idea of doing something a bit different where we could talk about any sport, in any country, at any time of the year, at any time in history.”
