Veteran late-night talkback host Graeme Gilbert has died, aged 76, the 2SM Super Radio Network (SRN) has confirmed.

Gilbert hosted Talk Tonight, broadcasting nightly from Sydney across as many as 30 stations throughout regional New South Wales and Queensland, from 2000 until he left the network in 2023. He had been in care since October 2025.

"Graeme was deeply loved by his audience across the Super Radio Network, and that affection was mutual. He genuinely adored his listeners and had a lifelong passion for the radio industry. He truly loved what he did behind the microphone," SRN said in a statement.

"He was heard across every station in the Super Radio Network, bringing his talk program to audiences right across Australia. Through our Newcastle station, 2HD, Graeme consistently delivered outstanding survey results - a reflection not only of his talent, but of the genuine connection and trust he built with listeners over many years," the network said.

Career background

Gilbert first encountered radio as a schoolboy at the Newcastle Show. He went on to win several awards for his work not only as a news presenter but also as a commentator. In 1993, he ran as a candidate for the federal seat of Franklin, in Tasmania.

The 'India' quiz prank

During his tenure on Talk Tonight, Gilbert became known for a long-running prank played out in his nightly quiz segment, in which callers (Ed's note: many of them current or former radio employees), would answer "India" to every question, regardless of what was asked.

The prank continued for years. Staff at 2SM were at times required to take callers' numbers and phone them back to verify their identities before they could go to air.

SRN has told Mediaweek that Cheralyn Darcey will hold a special tribute to Gilbert tonight during her show, which will include the opportunity for listeners to share their memories of Gilbert.
