SBS brings multilingual voices to Bondi in Harmony Week

SBS will also take part in Waverley Council’s Global Table event at Bondi Junction.

SBS will broadcast live in 10 languages from Bondi Pavilion this Saturday as part of its Harmony Week programming.

The special outside broadcast, taking place on 21 March, will feature nine language programs alongside English-language content, with community voices invited to reflect on living together in a diverse Australia during the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The public event comes in the wake of the December 14 attack at Bondi Beach targeting Jewish Australians, with SBS saying the broadcast is intended to support dialogue and collective healing across communities.

The day will include contributions from local leaders, first responders, residents and visitors, including Ahmed Al-Ahmed, widely recognised for his actions during the Bondi attack.

Programs will broadcast in Arabic, English, Filipino, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, with content distributed across radio, online and social platforms.

Jane Palfreyman, acting managing director at SBS, said the initiative reflects the broadcaster’s role in strengthening inclusion.

“As the national public broadcaster for all Australians, SBS is committed to amplifying diverse perspectives and fostering dialogue that strengthens inclusion. Bringing communities from different faith and cultural backgrounds together at Bondi Beach like this is a powerful way to highlight solidarity and collective healing,” Palfreyman said.

David Hua, SBS director of audience and language content, said broadcasting directly from Bondi allows communities to engage in their preferred language.

“Broadcasting from Bondi Beach allows us to connect directly with communities and ensure their voices are heard in their preferred languages, building bridges and sharing hopes for Australia’s future. It reflects the heart of SBS’s purpose – to cherish diversity, promote understanding, and help all Australians feel a sense of belonging,” Hua said.

Alongside the Bondi Pavilion broadcasts, SBS will also take part in Waverley Council’s Global Table event at Bondi Junction, where reporters and on-ground activations, including a photobooth, will support the wider Harmony Week celebrations.
