7NEWS Sydney has promoted Tanya Weingarth to deputy Sydney news director, giving the former Nine executive producer a senior role in Geoff Dunn’s newsroom.

Dunn announced the appointment in an internal email seen by Mediaweek.

“I’m extremely pleased to announce that Tanya Weingarth has been promoted to the role of Deputy Sydney News Director,” he wrote.

“Since Tanya’s arrival just over a year ago, she has proved to be an outstanding leader, full of energy, enthusiasm and ideas.

“She’s also a delight to work with, and I’m sure you’ll all congratulate Tanya on her appointment.”

From the 6pm bulletin to newsroom leadership

Weingarth joined Seven in 2025 as executive producer of its 6pm Sydney news bulletin. According to her LinkedIn profile, she previously worked across Australia’s major television networks, including a decade at Nine in roles that included executive producer of its 6pm news.

Her promotion puts someone with direct experience of the Sydney evening news contest alongside Dunn in the newsroom’s leadership team.

Speaking to Mediaweek last year, Dunn said his approach was to build on the Sydney team’s strengths. He also stressed the value of consistency in the 6pm bulletin and local reporting that reflects what viewers need to know.

The appointment also comes as Seven’s news leadership works through its direction following the merger of Seven West Media and Southern Cross Media Group.

In an earlier internal email reported by Mediaweek, national news director Ray Kuka told staff that news and editorial teams were central to the combined company’s plans. He said the news leadership team would develop short- and long-term strategies for the business.
