The May Australian Podcast Ranker has revealed news remains Australia’s leading podcast genre, while Mamamia Out Loud retained the top podcast spot.
The ranker, released by Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) in partnership with Triton Digital, is a monthly snapshot of the top 300 podcasts listened to by Australians, and the top 300 Australian podcasts. Results comply with IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines.
Lizzie Young, CEO of CRA, said podcast listening continues to grow in Australia, with 55 per cent of Australians now consuming podcasts each month, up from 52 per cent in 2025.
“With 55% of Australians now consuming podcasts each month – up from 52% in 2025 – the growth of this medium is undeniable,” Young said.
“The Ranker is the industry’s response to that scale: verified, independent measurement that gives publishers, agencies and advertisers a single source of truth to plan and invest with confidence.”

News leads podcast genres
News has held Australia’s number one podcast genre position since the start of 2026. In May, the genre recorded 4,910,594 monthly listeners.
The ranker also highlighted the commercial profile of news podcast audiences. Nearly 80 per cent of news podcast listeners are the primary grocery shopper, while almost half are planning domestic travel this year.
Among news podcast listeners, 41 per cent are planning international travel, 37 per cent have a new phone on their list, and 35 per cent are considering home tech.

Mamamia Out Loud tops podcasts
Mamamia Out Loud, produced by Mamamia, was the leading podcast in May with 1,133,138 monthly listeners.
Hamish & Andy, produced by LiSTNR (SCA), ranked second with 864,800 monthly listeners. Sky News Australia Update, produced by News Corp Australia, followed in third with 493,026 monthly listeners.
