Box Office: Downton Abbey brings a new era to screens, debuts to #1

This weekend the Australian box office made $9.85 million, down 33% from last week’s $14.62 million.

The only new entry this week is Downton Abbey: A New Era, the sequel to the 2019 film Downton Abbey, which has debuted to the top spot. Both films were written by Julian Fellowes, the creator and writer of the Downton Abbey TV show.

The main cast from the first movie returns, this time joined by Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, Dominic West, and Jonathan Zaccaï.

Dropping out of the top five this week is The Northmana Viking film starring Alexander Skarsgård that begins when Prince Amleth’s father is brutally murdered by his uncle, who kidnaps Amleth’s mother.

#1, Downton Abbey: A New Era, $1.90 million

In its first week of release, the latest addition to the Downton Abbey franchise averaged $4,072 over 466 screens as the Crawley family goes on a grand journey to the South of France.

#2, The Lost City $1.76 million

Starring Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, and Brad Pitt, The Lost City has stayed steady at #2 this week, averaging $4,437 across 397 screens. In its third week, the film has brought in a total of $12.2 million.

#3, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, $1.17 million

The latest instalment in the Harry Potter universe averaged $3,292 across 354 screens, grossing $16.84 million in four weeks of release.

#4, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, $1.17 million

After topping the charts last weekend, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has dropped to fourth place. It averaged $3,884 across 300 screens in its fifth week and has grossed a total of $19.87 million.

#5, The Bad Guys, $788,507

Animated crime comedy, The Bad Guys averaged $2,691 over 293 screens this weekend, making a total of $13.4 million to date.
