Box Office: Audiences come back for round two of The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad

• This week the Australian box office made $2.81 million

This week the Australian box office made $2.81 million, down 41% from last week’s $4.7 million.

Taking the top spot this week is The Suicide Squad, the standalone sequel (and soft reboot) to 2016’s Suicide Squad. This version was written and directed by James Gunn, of Guardians of the Galaxy fame. Original director David Ayer was set to return as director for a Suicide Squad sequel, but instead chose to develop a Gotham City Sirens film.

This time around, the American government sends the most dangerous supervillains in the world – including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, and Harley Quinn – to the remote island of Corto Maltese.

Falling out of the top five this week is Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. Based on the G.I. Joe franchise, the film is an origin story for G.I. Joe, as well as being a reboot of the original film series.

#1, The Suicide Squad, $1.41 million

The 10th film in the DC Cinematic Universe and the only film to top the $1 million mark this week, The Suicide Squad averaged $4,635 over 305 screens.

#2, Jungle Cruise, $479,644

Disney’s latest film starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Emily Blunt is based on the ride of the same name at Disneyland. This week it averaged $1,783 across 269 screens, making a total of $2.35 million.

#3, Space Jam: A New Legacy, $243,608

The sequel to the 1996 film has made a total of $11.12 million in its fourth week of release. This week it averaged $1,194 across 204 screens.

#4, Black Widow, $165,867

While DC claims the top of the charts this week, the latest from Marvel is still performing well in its fifth week. Black Widow averaged $829 across 200 screens this week, for a total of $12.78 million.

#5, Old, $126,820

Rounding out the top five is M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. It has made a total of $1.33 million, and averaged $675 across 188 screens this week.
