The ABC has confirmed production has commenced on the revival of groundbreaking creative competition series, Race Around the World, produced by Endemol Shine Australia for ABC TV and ABC iview.
The reimagined format builds on the legacy of the original 1990s hit, which became a cultural phenomenon for its raw, on-the-ground storytelling.
The new series is positioned as both a tribute to its original spirit and a bold update for a generation of filmmakers, storytellers, and content creators shaped by digital and global connection.
Rachel Millar, ABC Head of Entertainment, said the network is excited to reignite the program’s adventurous spirit: “We’re thrilled to bring back this iconic series to Australian audiences – to reignite that sense of creative adventure and champion a new generation of storytellers is really exciting.”
Originally known for challenging young filmmakers to craft short documentaries every 10 days while travelling internationally, the revived Race Around the World will again test participants’ creativity, resilience, and storytelling skill.
The series is currently casting for emerging Australian filmmakers willing to take on the challenge of producing a film every 10 days for 100 days across 10 countries.
Peter Newman, CEO of Endemol Shine Australia, said: “We are incredibly excited to be bringing back this much-loved global adventure competition. The original series struck a deep chord with viewers, is still talked about to this day and unearthed some amazing Australian screen talent. We strongly feel this brilliant format will inspire audiences across Australia and a new wave of talent who are lucky enough to be selected to take part.”
The production marks a continued investment by the ABC in original Australian storytelling, building on its commitment to nurturing creative talent and supporting diverse voices across the country’s media landscape.
Race Around the World will premiere on ABC TV and ABC iview in 2026. Applications for aspiring contestants are now open at www.RaceAroundTheWorldCasting.com.au.
