ABC Melbourne’s Sharnelle Vella shares baby news

ABC Radio Melbourne will announce a temporary co host to join Bob Murphy in the new year.

Exciting, but with a hint of sadness for breakfast radio regulars.

774 ABC Radio Melbourne Breakfast host Sharnelle Vella has announced she is expecting her first child.

She revealed on air that she and husband Nicholas will welcome a baby girl in March.

After the controversy surrounding the reckless comment from her co-host Bob Murphy about her past, the joyful moment came as a much needed reprieve for the radio duo.

It was also a huge moment for the radio host, choosing to share her story publicly to raise awareness around issues like endometriosis and infertility.

Issues not talked about

“Nicholas and I are thrilled to share that we’re expecting a baby girl next year,” Sharnelle said.

“Our journey to get here hasn’t been easy, but we’re grateful for the support of our loved ones and friends. We hope our story can offer hope to others navigating endometriosis and infertility.”

Vella also revealed she was diagnosed with stage four endometriosis, despite having no symptoms, following years of fertility challenges.

“I’m sharing my story to shed light on this often misunderstood condition and to support the one million Australian women living with endometriosis,” she said.

“We need to keep talking, keep listening, and work towards a future where women are heard, believed, and supported in their health journeys.”

Warm support from ABC

774 ABC Radio Melbourne Local Manager Shelley Hadfield said the station and its audience were delighted by the news.

“This is an exciting time for any family, including 774 ABC Radio Melbourne and listeners,” Hadfield said.

“We have some exciting things planned to celebrate the new arrival and Sharnelle won’t be too far away from the program. We look forward to checking in with her on the show after she welcomes her baby girl.”

Vella will begin maternity leave at the end of February and intends to return to the Breakfast program before the end of 2026.
