“The star of the show is the food”: 10’s Rick Maier on MasterChef in 2021

“Like a much-treasured family recipe, the mission statement for MasterChef Australia never changes.”

Last week, MasterChef Australia returned for its 13th season on Channel 10

Mediaweek spoke to 10’s head of drama and executive production Rick Maier about what the broadcaster will be cooking up on the show in 2021.

MasterChef had a great year last year; how do you build on that in 2021? And what do you think was the reason for its ratings success?

It really was a phenomenal season, and a great way to introduce our new judges. Covid certainly helped create not just the time and space back in the family kitchen, but a newfound respect for food.

We know from the success of both seasons last year (including Junior MasterChef) the show was being enjoyed by both diehard fans and a whole new audience. It sounds corny to suggest we were bringing families together, but it certainly didn’t hurt.

Was production disrupted much due to Covid this season?

Executive producer Marty Benson and his team at ESA (Endemol Shine Australia) did a brilliant job under very difficult circumstances. Lockdown affected every aspect of production, and this is a big and complex series to produce as you know.  So yes, enormous impact, especially on the contestants, the judges, the guest chefs and the crew.

MasterChef Australia is also a major exercise in logistics – months and months in the planning, with every challenge hoping to elevate and build on previous seasons. When you think of something as simple as food logistics, say, you realise “pivoting” takes on a whole new meaning. The Queen Mary does not pivot easily.

The judges are in their second year now on the show, will there be any changes to how they are presented or interact this season?

As always, the star of the show is the food. We know from our research there is a fascination with different cuisines from different cultures and the process of bringing those dishes to life. That’s where the judges work so beautifully, not just with Jock and Andy’s expertise as chefs, but through Melissa’s brilliant knowledge of food. Their skills sets are so complementary. Like all of us – they just want the contestants to fly high and achieve their goals.

Heading into production what were some changes or improvements 10 wanted to make this year?

Like a much-treasured family recipe, the mission statement for Masterchef Australia never changes. This is an inclusive, nurturing, positive environment where every year we try to find everyday Australians with a passion for food ready to take on the challenge. The true North for us is always authenticity.

What are your goals for the program in 2021?

We have ratings targets, and very wonderful commercial partners. So obviously the more people we can reach, the happier we’ll be. It’s a great show and it deserves the biggest possible audience. And it’s a great show to watch with friends and family.

Could MasterChef do two seasons in one year? and will we see more Junior MasterChef or other iterations of the format?

It’s happened before; I’m sure it will happen again is some form.
