Production begins on dark crime comedy ‘Reckless’ in Fremantle

BBC Studios Productions Australia has commenced filming Reckless, a darkly comic thriller adapted from the Scottish series Guilt, for SBS and NITV.

Filming is underway in Fremantle on Reckless, a new four-part suspense drama produced by BBC Studios Productions Australia. Commissioned by SBS and NITV, the series is supported by Screen Australia, Screenwest, and Screen NSW.

Reckless is led by actress Tasma Walton (The Twelve, Mystery Road) and AACTA Award winner Hunter Page-Lochard (The Newsreader, Critical Incident) as estranged siblings who become entangled in the aftermath of a fatal hit-and-run incident. The story, set against the backdrop of Fremantle, quickly spirals into a darkly comic exploration of crime and family conflict.

The cast and crew

The series is created and executive produced by Kodie Bedford (Return to Paradise, Mystery Road), a Western Australian First Nations writer returning to her home state for this production. Bedford is joined by director and co-executive producer Beck Cole (Deadloch, Wentworth) and producer Andy Walker (The Survivors). Executive producing are also Kylie Washington (BBC Studios) and Megan Palinkas, with Fiona McConaghy as co-producer.

Reckless features a large ensemble cast including Jessica De Gouw, Clarence Ryan, Jane Harber, Tracy Mann, Duncan Fellows, Perry Mooney, Kelton Pell, Matthew Dyktynski, Paul Tassone, Peter Rowsthorn, Steve Le Marquand, and newcomer Maddie Young.

Adapting a Scottish series

An adaptation of the Scottish series Guilt by Neil Forsyth, Reckless aims to localise the narrative with a distinctly Western Australian tone.

The project is expected to inject more than $5 million into the WA economy, with 250 jobs created and up to 20 speaking roles for local talent.

NITV Head of Indigenous Commissioning Dena Curtis and SBS Head of Scripted Nakul Legha described the show as “a tense and darkly funny thriller packed with sharp twists and unforgettable characters,” underscoring its ambition to deliver bold, human stories.

BBC Studios’ EVP Kylie Washington added, “This series is a perfect example of BBC Studios’ ambition to craft and share the world’s most compelling stories – unapologetically Western Australian, darkly funny, and deeply human.”

Reckless is set to premiere later this year on SBS, NITV and SBS On Demand. International distribution is handled by Federation Studios.
