2016 news highlights: Simon Crerar

Print and online editors choose their highlights of 2016

We had an exciting year, with former Crikey editor Marni Cordell joining us just before the budget to lead our fearless BuzzFeed News reporting team into its first election campaign – see political editor Mark Di Stefano’s “What A Time To Be Alive (MUP)” for the warts-and-all #ausvotes story.

BuzzFeed’s most important story this year was the plebiscite (the legislation that finally died). Our brilliant, young LGBT beat reporter Lane Sainty filed more than 70 articles on the topic, shaping the national agenda by reporting the views of the LGBT community, and those opposed to marriage equality. Lane’s definitive take is a must-read: bzfd.it/plebisciteRIP.
