November 29: A new breed of reality + mind-controlling space invaders

TV critic Andrew Mercado’s rundown on what to watch on the box tonight

First Contact

First Contact 8.30pm on SBS

It is very clever of SBS to air this second series during the first week of non-ratings because this might get it some more attention with no competition. Then again, some people will always prefer to watch repeats of NCIS (Ten), Gordon Ramsay yelling (Seven) or Owen Wilson being cute (Nine). That would be a shame because this is one of those rare TV series that is important because it brings something to the national debate about our indigenous issues. Six celebrities are being immersed into Aboriginal Australia including Dicko, Tom Ballard and Natalie Imbruglia (which is probably why Beth is not available to attend the wedding of her ex-husband Brad to Lauren on Neighbours all this week).

Hollywood Medium With Tyler Henry 8.30pm on 9Life

Happy first year anniversary to this trashy digital channel which has found an audience interested in a steady diet of Million Dollar Listings, Real Housewives and Kardashians. There’s not a lot of fast-tracking going on here because it is another free-to-air premiere of a show that has already screened first on Foxtel. Tonight, repeats begin of the Hollywood psychic who foresaw Donald Trump’s “electoral failure” back in August (oops) and gives “stars” like Tori Spelling closure about their dead pets (OK then).

Supergirl 8.40pm on FOX8

It’s a huge DC Comics crossover all this week on Foxtel when everybody has to join forces to combat a group of “mind-controlling space invaders” called the Dominators. Helen Slater (1984’s Supergirl movie) guest stars tonight as Zara’s mother to kick things off and then tomorrow The Flash takes over, followed by Arrow on Thursday and a big finale Friday on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. And coming next year? Another Supergirl/Flash crossover that will be a… musical!
