How Linda Marigliano puts her own spin on podcasting

Linda Marigliano might be one of the busiest women in audio at the moment. On top of her LiSTNR original podcast’s Brooke & Linda’s Dream Club and The Spin with Linda Marigliano, the ex triple j presenter is also hosting SCA’s Concert in the Clouds on LiSTNR as well as producing her own podcast Tough Love.

Podcast Week caught up with Marigliano to talk about these projects and how the lifting of lockdowns around the country has helped her produce new and insightful content.

Marigliano said that now life is starting to go back to normal that she can immerse herself in culture again, which helps her when making her shows.

“It’s the simple thing of being able to sit in a cinema and being able to actually turn your phone off and be totally immersed in a cinematic experience, not to be watching and streaming a show just on your laptop. I was able to go back to an art gallery a few weeks ago for the first time and it was so lovely, that sense of stillness that you get when you can be inspired by something that someone has created and poured their love into. Similarly with music, I was able to go to my first music festival in so long on the weekend when I went to Ability Fest in Melbourne, and it was just so positive and joyful.”

The Spin

When asked what the secret ingredient is to producing The Spin, Marigliano said that is like putting together a good DJ set.

“You want a journey and you want variety. You want something that ticks off everything which is hard to do on a weekly basis. The breadth of releases is always so vast, but you want to make sure that you’re representing an artist that’s really loved and they’ve got some big hugely hyped thing. There is an Adele that comes out and you want to showcase that, but at the same time, you want to be showcasing the person that’s going to be Adele in 10 years’ time. The magic thing is knowing that it’s our role to curate, and have a listener that trusts that you’re putting the right things in front of them.”

Concert in the Clouds

Concert in the Clouds is about to enter its third year in January 2022 (see more below) and Marigliano will be involved as the host. It’s a role that she said she loves doing because it brings a live energy to the space.

“Concert in the Clouds is this amazing outlet to share the energy of live music, which is so very different to a normal podcast. It is its own beast, it’s a very different energy. It’s high energy that is really community based, and that shares this visceral excitement that you can flow into a broadcast like no other.

“One of the things I loved at triple j so much was being able to broadcast at festivals, because it’s a whole different game, to get to really feel so hyped up and share that hype.”

Recognition

Marigliano has been well represented in the nominations for this year’s Australian Podcast Awards with two nominations for Dream Club (best arts and culture podcast & best Indigenous podcast) as well as for her Tough Love podcast (best new podcast & best lockdown podcast). When asked about the nominations she said it was really sweet.

“With Dream Club, it’s something that we’ve created out of nothing. To have that kind of recognition that even just a few people like it was so exciting. This came out of nothing, this didn’t exist, it’s a very different sort of reward.

“Being able to partner with LiSTNR on The Spin and Dream Club while being in Australia when I was meant to be overseas has felt really special to again just create something out of nothing. It felt really rewarding being able to create exciting varieties of content across the board.”

Concert in the Clouds to return on LiSTNR

Several celebrated artists will be among the line-up of music icons performing at LiSTNR’s Concert in the Clouds this summer.

Now in its third year, Concert in the Clouds will be exclusively available on LiSTNR this year to bring fans the ultimate music event, without the queues or last-minute cancellations.

Concert in the Clouds

Concert in the Clouds is a unique experience, allowing listeners to feel as though they are in the throng of the crowd watching their favourite artist strut their stuff on stage from the comfort of home or wherever they are.

Concert in the Clouds will be hosted by musician, DJ and podcastser Linda Marigliano, who has hosted some of Australia’s biggest music events including Splendour in the Grass, Laneway Festival, and New Years Eve LIVE from the Sydney Opera House. Linda is also the host of The Spin on LiSTNR which every week serves up the best new music with artist interviews with artists from around the world. Linda will be joined by on ground announcers Tim Lee and David Williams.

Over three weekends on Sunday, January 2, 9 and 16, listeners can tune in to hear more than 40 top artists performing more than 20 hours of live music on LiSTNR. The calibre of artists on this year’s virtual line-up is set to make Concert In the Clouds 2022 our biggest and best yet, from Billie Eilish to Nirvana, P!nk to AC/DC, Ed Sheeran to Queen, and many more.

Concert in the Clouds will be available on the LiSTNR app in January 2022, kicking off on Sunday January 2.

Three BBC news programs come to LiSTNR

Three of the BBC’s news programs are now available on the LiSTNR app as part of SCA’s partnership with the BBC. The shows include BBC News Bulletin, BBC Business Update, and BBC Sports Update which will provide Australian listeners with another voice on global events of the day.

Apple Podcasts awards Best of 2021

Each year, the Apple Podcasts Best of recognises the best and most popular podcasts for their exceptional content, unique ability to engage audiences, and innovation in craft, spanning production, presentation, sound design and more.

This year, Apple Podcasts Best of 2021 has awarded A Slight Change of Plans with Maya Shankar from Pushkin Industries as Best Show of the Year, and Anything for Selena with Maria Garcia from WBUR and Futuro Studios as Newcomer of the Year.

A Slight Change of Plans mixes storytelling with the science of human behaviour to help listeners navigate their own big change. The show features stories about all sorts of change, from Tiffany Haddish discussing how she navigated the foster care system, to John Elder Robison, who underwent experimental brain treatment to try and increase his emotional sensitivity.

Anything for Selena asks questions about belonging through the lens of the host’s lifelong reverence for artist Selena Quintanilla.

“2021 marked the start of a new chapter for podcasting with shows that moved us in ways unlike ever before,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats. “We are honoured to recognise the phenomenal creators who are redefining podcasting with this year’s best shows, and to help more listeners around the world discover, enjoy and support their inspiring work.”
