Acast’s Australian True Crime joins the Podcast Ranker – straight into Top 20

Commercial Radio Australia has released the latest Australian Podcast Ranker tables for performance in the month of August 2023. Increased listening is leading to climbing podcast revenues.

The results comes after it was recently revealed digital audio advertising spend in Australia reached $68.1 million in the June quarter, a 14% jump over the same period a year ago, and up 31% from the 2023 March quarter’s $51.9 million, according to IAB Australia’s Online Advertising Expenditure Report (OAER) prepared by PwC.

Podcast advertising lifted by 24% to $27.5m in the June quarter and rose 39% from $19.8m in the 2023 March quarter. Streaming audio spend grew over 8% to $41m for the June quarter.

The 2023 Infinite Dial Australia study revealed Australia has the most voracious podcasts consumers globally, with monthly Australian podcast listening at 43% of Australians aged 10+ listening monthly.

The biggest mover in the top 10 was Shameless, published and represented by Shameless Media. The podcast was up three spots and into the Top 5 at #4.

The highest “new” entry on the Podcast Ranker was Australian True Crime. It is actually close to 400 episodes old and the Acast series, hosted by Meshel Laurie and Emily Webb, has just been listed for the first in the Ranker.

New in the Top 40 on debut was Your News Now, a bulletin from ARN/iHeart.

ARN celebrates Podcast Ranker milestone

The August Podcast Ranker marks a 40th consecutive month for ARN’s iHeartPodcast Network Australia as the #1 publisher, with over 21m downloads for the month and over 5m monthly listeners. iHeart reports 10m more downloads, and over 1m more monthly listeners, than any other publisher in August.

ARN’s iHeartPodcast Network Australia claims Top 10 podcasts than anyone else with Audioboom’s Casefile (#1 crime podcast and #2 overall), The Imperfects (#1 health & wellness and #5 overall), The Kyle & Jackie O Show (#1 catch up and #6 overall), Life Uncut with Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne jumped to #8 overall (#1 relationship) and rounding out the top 10 was the most downloaded podcast for the month, Stuff You Should Know (#1 Knowledge).

iHeartPodcast Network Australia noted these other international success stories in this marker: On Purpose with Jay Shetty up three spots to #12 overall (#2 Health & Wellness), She’s On The Money at #27 (#1 Finance), Clubby Sports Dyl & Friends which increased its position to #29, and Audioboom’s No Such Thing As A Fish at #34.

ARN’s head of digital audio Corey Layton said: “Hitting the big 40 is the result of our incredible partners and team continuing to capture the attention of Australian ears and brands. With 81% of Australian podcast listeners choosing to hear one of our shows, today’s result showcases the strength of our phenomenal slate.”

LiSTNR supports podcasts in new campaign

In the rankings by number of listeners and downloads from total number of publishers represented, LiSTNR ranked #1 in both categories.

The LiSTNR August came as the publisher released a new podcast campaign late in the month.

“Insights from our key media agencies revealed that, while strong reach remains a necessity for planning podcast campaigns, personalisation is recognised and valued by them as being at the very heart of LiSTNR’s offering,” SCA chief marketing officer Nikki Clarkson said.

SCA chief commercial officer Seb Rennie said: “Australia now leads the world in podcast listening and we are seeing podcasts connecting with audiences across the day with trusted voices. Research among our client base has revealed that integrated podcast campaigns improve brand consideration and drive action.”

The publisher continued to see Hamish & Andy at the top of the Ranker chart.

“It’s great to see Hamish & Andy continue their run as the most listened to podcast and the early growth of our new podcast titles, which debuted in the ranker, supporting our commitment and investment in commissioning and creating podcasts for Australian audiences,” said SCA executive head LiSTNR podcasts Grant Tothill.
