One Nation has welcomed Kyle Sandilands’ public show of support for leader Pauline Hanson, after the radio host revealed he had spent time with her camp and helped sharpen the party’s messaging.
Sandilands, speaking on industry podcast The GameChangers, said he had introduced Hanson to new contacts and described her as “one of my favourite people now,” adding: “I’m loving the orange wave.”
A One Nation spokesperson confirmed the relationship to Mediaweek and praised Sandilands ahead of his broadcasting comeback.
“Kyle and Pauline have spent a little bit of time together over recent months,” the spokesperson said.
“Kyle and Pauline are often mischaracterised, but there’s no mistaking their passion for this country.”
A change of heart
Sandilands admitted his view of Hanson had shifted significantly after spending time with her and fellow politician Barnaby Joyce.
“She is really a surprise,” he said. “I didn’t like her that much prior. I just thought 30 years of ‘Please Explain’ and word stumbles on the news, like the gotcha moments.”
He said both figures had changed his mind. “They’re not what everyone thinks they are – a lunatic, racist party of country bumpkins. [They believe in] a lot more common-sense stuff.”
New connections, clearer message
Sandilands said he had also introduced Hanson to what he described as “upper-society types” who had responded positively to her positions.
“Her messaging hasn’t really changed; it’s just clearer now,” he said.
One Nation echoed the sentiment, saying the pair shared common ground beyond their public personas.
Back on air
The spokesperson also turned attention to Sandilands’ upcoming subscription-based radio show, expected to launch in August.
“We’re pleased to see Kyle back on air doing what he does best,” the spokesperson said. “We can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for listeners.”
