Radio Ratings, GfK Survey 7, 2019

3AW and Gold are the new leadership double
• Christian O’Connell now #1 FM breakfast, overtakes Fox
• Ross and John partnership secures 3AW another 20%+ breakfast

UP: 3AW +1.3
DOWN: 101.9 Fox FM -0.8

3AW 15.2% (13.9%)

The record-breaking run of ratings success enjoyed by breakfast hosts Ross Stevenson and John Burns continues. It seems set to continue for some time with Ross telling a listener last week he and John will be broadcasting from the Tokyo Olympics next year. This survey breakfast share was back above 20%, the second time they have achieved this in the past two years. Breakfast was up 3.3 this survey, while the other big improver was Tom Elliott in drive, up 1.2 to 12.3%. No negative impact on the new evening schedule where share is up 0.2 to 14.7% for John Stanley.

Gold 104.3 12.5% (12.0%)

ARN executives and competitors have both talked to Mediaweek about the great work breakfast host Christian O’Connell has done after relocating from the UK last year. He now ranks #1 FM breakfast on 9.1% despite share dropping from 9.5% last survey. (Fox dropped further.) Gold is again the #1 station overall with 12.5% and a cume audience of 1,105,000, the biggest in the station’s history. The station continues to perform well across the day too with 14.1% in morning (+1.5) and 16.8% in afternoon (+2.3). Gavin Miller is not too shabby in drive either, despite share dipping 1.4 to 11.2%, he is again #1 FM drive.

smoothfm 91.5 9.1% (9.2%)

This is the only metro market in Australia where Nova Entertainment doesn’t have the #1 station share and cume. Don’t expect too much of a change though as smoothfm is not far off the pace, although cume did drop 68,000 to 921,000.

101.9 Fox FM 8.6% (9.4%)

This is the station’s lowest share since 2017. Breakfast is #2 behind Gold with 8.7% which is the equal-lowest share in two years. Drive with Hughesy and Ed dipped 1.3 to 10.5%. Fox still has the biggest Melbourne cume audience with 1.072m.

Nova 100 7.1% (7.2%)

This is the station’s lowest share for 12 months, but cume is not far off top spot with 1.069m. Breakfast remains well above its recent lows.

105.1 Triple M 6.5% (6.2%)

Shocker of a survey for The Hot Breakfast with Eddie, Wil and Darc recording the station’s smallest breakfast share in over four years. The station’s cume also dropped below 650,000. Morning, afternoon and drive had a better survey though, all reporting growth, with Kennedy Molloy in drive up 0.8 to 7.1%.

KIIS 101.1 FM 5.5% (5.8%)

Another tough survey after some positive signs earlier in 2019. Breakfast with Jase and PJ has slid back close to what is was averaging last year.

SEN 3.1% (3.7%)

All dayparts took a hit in the survey with AFL being played during half of the survey period. Breakfast was down 0.5 to 3.8% and morning was off 0.9 to 3.2%.

Macquarie Sports 1278 0.4% (0.3%)

If this rating doesn’t drop close to zero next survey in some dayparts you have to wonder what people are listening to.
