HOYTS and IMAX crack record deal to expand footprint across ANZ

The move will nearly double IMAX’s footprint with HOYTS, expanding from four locations today to 14 in the coming years.

HOYTS Cinemas and IMAX Corporation have signed a landmark agreement to roll out 10 new IMAX with Laser locations across Australia and New Zealand, marking the largest IMAX deal ever in the region.

The move will nearly double IMAX’s footprint with HOYTS, expanding from four locations today to 14 in the coming years.

This deal follows the recent acquisition by the Vinyl Group of Val Morgan and Co.’s (Aust.) digital media business. Pty Ltd (subsidiary of The HOYTS Group)

HOYTS CEO comments

At least three of the new locations are set to open before the end of 2026, with the remaining sites rolling out across 2027 and 2028.

Damian Keogh

Damian Keogh, group CEO and president of HOYTS, said the agreement reinforces the company’s focus on premium experiences.

“Expanding our IMAX footprint will give more audiences access to one of the most immersive and technologically advanced cinema experiences. This investment reflects our continued focus on innovation and ensuring HOYTS remains at the forefront of premium cinema,” he said.

Demand continues to surge

Giovanni Dolci

Giovanni Dolci, chief commercial officer at IMAX, said the deal reflects strong demand in Australia.

“This second agreement with HOYTS within a year highlights the accelerating momentum we’re seeing across Australia and reinforces the strength of IMAX in the market,” he said.

“Australia is one of our highest performing markets globally, where demand for IMAX has outstripped our footprint. Together with HOYTS, we’re moving quickly to meet that demand and bring the IMAX experience to more audiences.”

Rapid growth in Australia

IMAX has expanded quickly in Australia, growing from a single location in 2022 to 10 today, with a further 14 sites in development, including this agreement.

In 2025, the company delivered a record AUD $18.6 million at the local box office, with Australia ranking among its top global markets.

Three Australian locations, including HOYTS Chadstone, now rank among the top 30 IMAX sites worldwide.

Backed by blockbuster momentum

The growth has been supported by strong performance from Filmed for IMAX titles, with Project Hail Mary delivering the second biggest opening weekend in the market.

The momentum is expected to continue with upcoming releases, including Mortal Kombat II, Star Wars: The Mandalorian, and Grogu.

The new sites will feature IMAX with Laser technology, offering 4K projection, enhanced brightness and contrast, and precision audio designed to deliver a more immersive cinema experience.
