ARIA Charts: 5 Seconds of Summer have their time in the sun

5 Seconds of Summer

Sam Smith and Kim Petras debut on the singles chart at #1

Singles Chart

Sam Smith debuts at the top of the ARIA singles chart with Unholy, their duet with German-born, US-based pop sensation Kim Petras. It is the English superstar’s second #1 here, following Too Good At Goodbyes in 2017, and their first top 10 hit since How Do You Sleep in 2019.

This ARIA #1 result marks Sam Smith’s 14th top 40 single in Australia, 7 of these have been top 10.

Previous #1, David Guetta and Bebe Rexha’s I’m Good (Blue), now sits at #2 on the singles chart. The success follows viral success after a clip of the track clocked over 500 million views on Tiktok.

The top Australian single on the charts this week once again comes from The Kid Laroi, with Stay dipping a spot to land at #16.

Albums Chart

It’s a third Australian act in as many weeks debuting at the top of ARIA albums chart this week, as 5 Seconds of Summer score #1 with 5SOS5

All five of the indie-rock outfit’s studio albums have topped the albums chart: 5 Seconds of Summer in 2014, Sounds Good Feels Good in 2015, Youngblood in 2018 and Calm in 2020 (their live album LiveSOS peaked at #7 in 2014). One of Australia’s most successful musical exports, 5 Seconds of Summer’s first three albums also went to #1 in the US, while Sounds Good Feels Good and  Calm hit #1 in the UK.

The band said: “Thank you ARIA, if you’ve been following the band for the past decade, we love you. Thank you for five #1 albums, we did it!”

Annabelle Herd, ARIA CEO, said: “What an incredible three weeks for Australian albums, congratulations to 5 Seconds of Summer on the success of their new album and an incredible decade of music loved across the world. We are so proud of 5SOS and the success they continue to have globally, and we can’t wait to see them back touring in Australia later this year.”

Robbie Williams moves up to #2 on the albums chart from #19 last week with XXV, following his performance in the AFL Grand Final last weekend.

Aussie hip hop artist Seth Sentry breaks the top 20, returning to the charts at #11 with 2012’s ARIA Award-nominated This Was Tomorrow
