ABC appoints Crikey’s Cam Wilson as national AI tech reporter

Wilson joins Aunty in a newly created reporting role.

Cam Wilson has joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as its national AI tech reporter, after five years at Crikey.

Wilson announced the move on LinkedIn, saying the role is a new position at the ABC and, to his knowledge, the only reporting job in Australia solely dedicated to artificial intelligence.

“AI is one of the biggest stories in the world right now,” Wilson wrote.

“There’s an eye-watering amount of money, influence and hype involved which makes it ripe for critical, nuanced and innovative reporting.”

The appointment comes as artificial intelligence continues to reshape media, technology, regulation, copyright and the broader creative economy.

Wilson’s remit will focus on how Australians are using AI, as well as the companies, institutions and policy decisions shaping the sector.

He has also invited tips related to Australians and AI, sharing his ABC email address for story leads.

Wilson previously worked at Crikey, where he covered technology, platforms, internet culture and media.
