Marty Sheargold is heading back to the stage.
Seven months on from leaving Triple M, the comedian has announced he’ll return to stand-up with a national Come See Me Live tour, promising a mix of self-deprecation, storytelling and sharp observations.
“As much as I’ve been trying to embrace early retirement – I’m bored s**tless so I’m going to be the 54 year old man that I am. Fun, sexy, charming and humble. Let’s share moments and memories from my life. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll need a two-hour park,” Sheargold said.
“(You won’t cry). (You’d almost get away with an hour park, not quite).”
From breakfast radio to live comedy
Sheargold’s tour announcement comes after his controversial departure from Southern Cross Austereo’s (SCA) Triple M earlier this year.
Not long SCA confirmed Sheargold and the network had “mutually agreed to part ways.” The host was replaced in Melbourne breakfast by Mick Molloy, who took on Mick & MG in the Morning alongside Mark Geyer.
At the time, SCA said: “We respect Marty’s decision to take a break from breakfast radio. He is, and always will be, one of the greats of Australian radio and comedy.”
Last week, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found The Marty Sheargold Show breached decency standards after airing remarks described as “degrading and demeaning” towards women.
The ruling led to a censure of Triple M Sydney, Brisbane, Maryborough and Gold Coast, with ACMA chair Nerida O’Loughlin stating the comments “had the potential to normalise and perpetuate stereotypes that are harmful to women.”
Now, Sheargold appears ready to trade the unpredictability of radio for the controlled chaos of live stand-up, with tour dates set to be announced soon.
